Islamic Teachings on Excess Bedding and Clothing

Compiled by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (ḥafiẓahullāh)

❖ Question:

Is excess bedding and clothing meant for Shayṭān?

❖ Answer:

Yes.

It is narrated from Sayyidunā Jābir (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

"One mattress is for the man, one for his wife, a third for a guest, and the fourth is for Shayṭān."
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2084]

This indicates that keeping excess bedding, clothing, and similar items beyond need is not permissible, as it falls under extravagance and wastefulness.

Allah Almighty has condemned wasteful spending by saying:

إِنَّ الْمُبَذِّرِينَ كَانُوا إِخْوَانَ الشَّيَاطِينِ ۖ وَكَانَ الشَّيْطَانُ لِرَبِّهِ كَفُورًا ﴿٢٧﴾
“Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and Shayṭān is ever ungrateful to his Lord.”
[Sūrah al-Isrā’: 27]

Likewise, regarding those who exceed limits, it is said:

إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ ﴿٣١﴾
“Indeed, He does not love those who exceed limits.”
[Sūrah al-Aʿrāf: 31]
