Question:
If a worshipper realizes that he has slightly deviated from the Qiblah, is he required to repeat the prayer?
Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
A slight deviation from the Qiblah during prayer does not invalidate the prayer, provided that the worshipper is not inside Masjid al-Haram.
In Masjid al-Haram, the Qiblah—the exact Ka‘bah—is directly in front of the worshipper. If a person is there and his face is not precisely towards the Ka‘bah, then his prayer will be invalid, and he must repeat it.
Statement of the Scholars:
“If a person can see the Ka‘bah, yet does not face it directly, his prayer is invalid.”
Evidence from the Qur’an:
﴿فَوَلِّ وَجهَكَ شَطرَ المَسجِدِ الحَرامِ وَحَيثُ ما كُنتُم فَوَلّوا وُجوهَكُم شَطرَهُ﴾
(Sūrat al-Baqarah: 144)
“So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram, and wherever you are, turn your faces toward it.”
Ruling for Those Far from the Ka‘bah:
If a person is far from the Ka‘bah and cannot see it—even if he is within Makkah—then it is obligatory for him to face the direction (jihah) of the Qiblah. In such cases, a slight deviation does not invalidate the prayer.
Prophetic Guidance:
The Prophet ﷺ said to the people of Madinah:
«مَا بَيْنَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ قِبْلَةٌ»
(Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī, ḥadīth: 342; Sunan Ibn Mājah, ḥadīth: 1011; al-Ḥākim, al-Mustadrak: 1/225 – declared authentic by al-Ḥākim and agreed upon by adh-Dhahabī)
“What lies between the east and the west is all Qiblah.”
Explanation:
- The people of Madinah face south when praying, so the entire range between east and west is considered Qiblah for them.
- This means that if their face turns slightly toward the east or west, the prayer remains valid, since the objective is facing the direction of the Qiblah, not its exact pinpoint.
- Similarly, for those who face west or east when praying, the Qiblah range is between north and south.
