The purpose of this article is to inform readers that the day celebrated as “Eid Zahra” on the 9th of Rabi’ al-Awwal is actually contrary to historical and religious facts. The Shia community considers this day a day of happiness, and sometimes on this occasion, insults and curses are directed towards the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, especially Hazrat Umar Farooq رضي الله عنه. In this writing, we will clarify the reality of this day with references from Shia books so that the Muslim Ummah can be saved from misguidance.
Myths prevalent among the Shia community
🔹 Myth 1: This day is celebrated because on this date the Prophet ﷺ married Hazrat Khadijah رضي الله عنها, and Hazrat Fatimah رضي الله عنها used to celebrate happiness every year. (This is an outright lie)
🔹 Myth 2: According to Shia traditions, the twelfth Imam Mahdi will appear on this date. However, the general Shia public is unaware of this fact.
🔸 The main reason popular among the public: The Shia community believes that the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (RA) occurred on the 9th of Rabi’ al-Awwal. According to them, (may Allah protect us) Hazrat Umar (RA) was an enemy of Ahl al-Bayt, therefore it is necessary to celebrate the day of his death as a day of happiness. For this reason, this day came to be called “Eid Zahra.”
Historical Reality
According to Ahl al-Sunnah and even many Shia scholars themselves, the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (RA) did not occur on the 9th of Rabi’ al-Awwal but on the 1st of Muharram. This misunderstanding or a weak narration is the basis of the belief prevalent among the public.
References from Shia Books
In these books, a narration is transmitted in which Hudhayfah says:
“Today is a blessed day because the Lord of the Worlds has destroyed your enemy and the enemy of your grandfather on this day, and He has accepted your mother’s prayer.”
This narration exists in the books of Shia scholars themselves, which they use as justification for “Eid Zahra.”
Practical Manifestation
On the 9th of Rabi’ al-Awwal by the Rafidah:
- Effigies are burned
- The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ are cursed
- It is considered a day of happiness and celebration
Some Shia make an excuse by saying that the effigy being burned is not of Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab ﷺ but of Umar ibn Sa’d. However, Allama Baqir Majlisi has clearly written that the 9th of Rabi’ al-Awwal is the day of the death of Sayyiduna Umar Farooq ﷺ, and therefore this day is celebrated as a festival.
Conclusion
All these stories and narrations are fabricated and false. The reality is:
✔️ The martyrdom of Sayyiduna Umar Farooq ﷺ occurred on the 1st of Muharram ✔️ The foundation of “Eid Zahra” is based on lies and weak narrations ✔️ This day is an innovation and misguidance in the name of Ahl al-Bayt ﷺ
Prayer
May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to act upon the religion with research, and protect the Muslim Ummah from the trials and evil of the Rafidah. آمین یا رب العالمین۔
