Naming the Child on the Seventh Day — Sunnah Guidelines

✿ Primary Hadith: Naming on the Seventh Day

Translation:
Samurah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The child is pledged with his ʿAqīqah; a sacrifice should be offered for him on the seventh day, his head should be shaved, and he should be named.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 1513)

❖ Note:

✅ While naming the child on the seventh day is Sunnah, naming earlier is also proven from authentic Aḥādīth.

✿ Additional Hadiths Supporting Early Naming:

◈ Ḥadīth 1 – Naming on the First Night:

Translation:
Anas رضي الله عنه reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“A boy was born to me last night, and I have named him after my father: Ibrāhīm.”

◈ Ḥadīth 2 – Changing a Name:
: 6191)

Translation:
When a son was born to Abū Usayd رضي الله عنه, he brought him to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ asked: “What is his name?”
He said: “Qilāl.”
The Prophet ﷺ replied: “No, his name is Mundhir.”

◈ Ḥadīth 3 – Naming During Ṭaḥnīk:
: 5621)

Translation:
A child was born to Abū Ṭalḥah رضي الله عنه, so Anas رضي الله عنه took him to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ performed ṭaḥnīk (chewed dates) and named him ʿAbdullāh.

✅ Summary:

  • It is Sunnah to name the child on the seventh day, along with shaving the head and offering ʿAqīqah.
  • However, naming earlier (even on the first night) is also valid and established from the Sunnah.
  • The Prophet ﷺ himself named his son and other children immediately after birth.
  • The Prophet ﷺ also corrected inappropriate names, replacing them with better ones.
