In Islam, there are a few fundamental conditions for the acceptance of any act of worship or good deed. If these conditions are not fulfilled, then apparently good deeds are not accepted by Allah Almighty. The religion of Islam teaches us that worship should be performed solely for Allah, according to the Shariah of the Prophet ﷺ, and with pure intention. This is sincerity — and without it, any act of worship is like a dead body without a soul.
Three Conditions for the Acceptance of Deeds
➊ First Condition:
The doer must be a monotheist — that is, sincerely affirm the oneness of Allah in the heart and not associate anyone with Him. If a person commits shirk (associating partners with Allah), all his deeds become void.
➋ Second Condition:
The intention must be solely for the pleasure of Allah Almighty and to draw near to Him, not for show or fame. This is called sincerity.
➌ Third Condition:
The deed must be according to the Quran and Sunnah. Any act not established by the Shariah of the Prophet ﷺ is rejected.
Clear Guidance of the Prophet ﷺ
Translation: “Whoever introduces into our religion something that is not part of it, it is rejected.”
In another narration, it is stated:
Translation: “Whoever does an action for which we have not given a command, it is rejected.”
Meaning of Ikhlas (Sincerity)
The word Ikhlas linguistically means “to sift” or “to purify from admixture.”
Legally, Ikhlas means that a servant seeks only the pleasure of Allah in his worship, without including any worldly purpose — such as praise, fame, wealth, or honor.
That is, the servant’s heart contains love for Allah, obedience to His command, and seeking His forgiveness and pleasure.
Worldly interests are not included in this intention.
Explanation by Hafiz Ibn Rajab (may Allah have mercy on him)
“When a servant acts with the conviction that Allah is watching him, that He is near, and aware of him, then he is sincere.
This state prevents a person from turning towards anything other than Allah.”
According to Imam Abu Uthman Nisaburi, may Allah have mercy on him, the four components of sincerity
① The intention should be solely for the pleasure of Allah.
② The action should be considered a favor of Allah’s ability so that self-conceit is eliminated.
③ The action should be performed with gentleness and steadiness, avoiding haste.
④ After completing the action, there should be a fear in the heart of acceptance, lest Allah reject it.
Allah Almighty says:
Translation: “Those who give whatever they give while their hearts are fearful because they will return to their Lord.”
The essence and importance of sincerity
❀ Sincerity is the soul of every act of worship.
Just as the body is dead without the soul, similarly worship is dead without sincerity.
❀ Sincerity is an action of the heart.
It enlightens the heart, whereas a heart without sincerity remains immersed in darkness.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Translation: “Allah does not look at your appearances or your wealth but looks at your hearts and your deeds.”
The Quranic importance of sincerity
Allah Almighty has declared sincerity as the foundation of faith and worship at many places in the Holy Quran. Without it, religion is incomplete and deeds are weightless.
❶ The Command of Sincerity in the Quran
Translation: “They were only commanded to worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion, avoiding shirk, establishing prayer, and giving zakat. That is the straight and correct religion.”
This verse contains five commands:
① Worship only Allah.
② Keep the religion sincere for Him.
③ Turn away from others besides Allah and adopt single-mindedness.
④ Perform prayer regularly.
⑤ Give zakat.
At the end it is stated:
Meaning: This is the pure and correct religion.
From this, it is understood that sincerity is the foundation of Islam, and without sincerity, one’s religion is lifeless.
❷ Religion is Purely for Allah Alone
Translation: “Say! The pure religion is only for Allah.”
Meaning, the religion accepted by Allah is that which is free from hypocrisy and shirk.
❸ Acceptance of Deeds Depends on Sincerity
Abu Imamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:
A person asked the Prophet ﷺ:
“O Messenger of Allah! If a person seeks reward in jihad as well as fame, what will he receive?”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
He will receive nothing.”
He repeated this three times, then said:
Translation: “Allah accepts only that deed which is purely for Him alone and in which His pleasure is sought.”
❹ The Command of Sincerity Also Given to the Prophet ﷺ
Translation: “Say, ‘Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion.'”
When this command was given to the Prophet ﷺ, surely it is also a command for his Ummah.
❺ The Reality of the World — Only Pure Deeds Are Accepted
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Translation: “The world and all that is in it is cursed, except for that which is done for the pleasure of Allah.”
That is, only the work done with pure intention is valuable.
❻ The Prophet ﷺ’s Prayer for Sincerity After Prayer
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite this prayer after every obligatory prayer:
Translation: “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone; He has no partner; His is the dominion and all praise is for Him; He is over all things competent. We dedicate our religion purely for Him, even if the disbelievers dislike it.”
This prayer clarifies the fact that after every act of worship, affirming and safeguarding sincerity is necessary.
❼ True Believers Are Those Who Purify Their Religion for Allah Alone
Translation: “Those who repent, who amend themselves, who hold fast to Allah, and who purify their religion solely for Allah—those will be with the believers.”
Allah Almighty has declared these four qualities—repentance, reform, connection to Allah, and sincerity—as signs of faith.
❽ The Relationship Between Intention and Sincerity
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Translation: “Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will get what they intended.”
For this reason, if the intention is sincere, the deed is accepted, and if the intention is for show, the deed is wasted.
The Importance of Sincerity in Various Acts of Worship
Sincerity is the essence of all acts of worship. If the intention includes showing off, self-display, or worldly motives, the blessings of good deeds are lost. The Prophet ﷺ clearly stated on many occasions that the value of an action depends on the intention.
Below we mention some important acts of worship in which special emphasis on sincerity has been made.
❶ Sincerity in Learning Religious Knowledge
Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Translation: “Whoever learns knowledge that is taught for the sake of Allah’s pleasure, but learns it for worldly benefit, will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection.”
This hadith is a warning for both scholars and students that the purpose of knowledge should be the pleasure of Allah, not fame, argument, or worldly honor.
❷ Sincerity in Tawheed and Belief
It is narrated from Hazrat Mu’adh (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Translation: “Whoever testifies La ilaha illallah with sincere intention from the heart, he will enter Paradise.”
In another narration:
Translation: “Allah has forbidden Hellfire for the person who says La ilaha illallah solely for the pleasure of Allah.”
❸ Sincerity in Prayer
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Translation: “Whoever prays in congregation with sincere intention for forty days without missing the first Takbir, will be recorded as free from both Hellfire and hypocrisy.”
❹ Sincerity in Prostrations
Hazrat Thawban (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Translation: “Perform more prostrations, because whenever you prostrate for the pleasure of Allah, Allah raises you one rank and erases one sin.”
❺ Sincerity in Building Mosques
It is narrated from Hazrat Uthman (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
Translation: “Whoever builds a mosque for the pleasure of Allah, Allah will build for him a similar house in Paradise.”
This indicates that if the intention is ostentation — that is, for fame or recognition — then that deed is worthless.
❻ Sincerity in Spending in the Way of Allah
Translation: “Those who spend to seek the pleasure of Allah and to strengthen their faith are like a garden on a high ground which yields twice as much fruit after heavy rain.”
Meaning, Allah multiplies sincere spending many times over.
❼ Sincerity in Brotherhood and Love
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
Translation: “Whoever loves for the sake of Allah, hates for the sake of Allah, gives for the sake of Allah, and withholds for the sake of Allah — has completed his faith.”
❽ Sincerity in the Funeral Prayer
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Translation: “When you pray over the deceased, pray for him with a sincere heart.”
❾ Sincerity in Controlling Anger
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Translation: “The greatest reward in the sight of Allah is the sip that a person drinks while restraining his anger solely for the pleasure of Allah.”
Further Manifestations of Sincerity and Its Great Benefits
Sincerity grants light to a servant’s deeds, gives them weight, and causes Allah to accept them. The Quran and Sunnah mention many deeds through which a person attains goodness in this world and the Hereafter as a result of sincerity.
❶ Sincerity in Sacrifice
Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Prophet ﷺ slaughtered two rams on the day of sacrifice, and when he ﷺ laid them down, he recited this supplication:
Translation: “I have turned my face towards the One who created the heavens and the earth, following the religion of Ibrahim عليه السلام, and I am not among the polytheists. My prayer, my sacrifice, my life, and my death are all for Allah, the Lord of the worlds. O Allah! This sacrifice is from You and for You, on behalf of Muhammad ﷺ and his Ummah.”
This supplication teaches us that whether it is sacrifice or any other act of worship, the intention must be solely for Allah.
❷ Sincerity in Hajj
Anas bin Malik رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Hajj on an old camel and wore a cloak worth less than four dirhams. Then he said:
Translation: “O Allah! Make this Hajj free from ostentation and show-off.”
Sincerity is the foundation that makes Hajj accepted; otherwise, travel, expenses, and effort all go to waste.
❸ Sincerity in Patience
Translation: “Those who patiently persevere for the sake of their Lord, establish prayer, spend secretly and openly, and repay evil with good, theirs is the good outcome.”
If patience is purely for Allah, it becomes a means of salvation.
❹ Sincerity in Humility
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Translation: “Whoever humbles himself for Allah, Allah will elevate him.”
Humility does not only mean outward gentleness but also considering oneself inferior in the heart and acknowledging Allah’s greatness.
❺ Fruits of Sincerity in Prayer and Good Deeds
By the blessing of sincerity, prayers are accepted and steadfastness in good deeds is established. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah accepts the prayer of the person who asks with pure intention and acts upon it.
❻ High Status in This World and the Hereafter
Hazrat Saad bin Abi Waqqas (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
Translation: “If you are given life and you perform any deed for the pleasure of Allah, then Allah will elevate your status in return.”
❼ Deliverance from Fear and Grief
Translation: “Whoever humbles himself before Allah and does good, for him is a reward with his Lord, and there will be no fear upon such people nor will they grieve.”
❽ Deliverance from Calamities — The Incident of the People of the Cave
The Prophet ﷺ narrated the story of three men who got trapped in a cave. They supplicated to Allah:
Translation: “O Allah! If I have done this deed for Your pleasure, then save us from this calamity.”
Each presented their sincere deed, and accordingly, Allah removed the stone from the cave for them.
This incident clearly shows that sincerity is the cause of deliverance from calamities.
❾ Protection from Sins
Translation: “We saved him from evil and immorality because he was one of Our sincere servants.”
This verse declares that a sincere servant automatically comes under Allah’s protection.
More Virtues and Great Rewards of Sincerity
Sincerity is a sign of a servant’s faith and a means of his salvation. The promises and rewards mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah for the sincere show that the most valuable thing before Allah is the servant’s pure heart.
❶ Salvation from the Evil of Satan
When Iblis resolved to mislead mankind, he said:
Translation: “Iblis said: O my Lord! Because You have put me astray, I will surely make (evil) attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all except Your sincere servants.”
That is, sincere servants remain safe from Satan’s deception because their intention is solely to please Allah.
❷ A Good Ending and the Promise of Paradise
It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Translation: “Whoever says ‘La ilaha illallah’ for the sake of Allah’s pleasure and dies in that state, he will enter Paradise. And whoever fasts or gives charity for the sake of Allah’s pleasure and dies in that condition, he will also enter Paradise.”
That is, actions performed with sincerity lead to a good end.
❸ Purity of the Heart
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Translation: “In the presence of three things, there is no hatred in the heart of a believer:
(1) Sincerity in actions for Allah,
(2) Well-wishing for the rulers of the Muslims,
(3) Remaining attached to their community.”
Sincerity removes diseases like envy, malice, and ostentation from the heart.
❹ Salvation from Allah’s Punishment
Allah Almighty says:
Translation: “We sent warners to those (nations), then see what was the end of those who were warned! Except for Allah’s sincere servants, they were saved (from punishment).”
That is, the sincere ones are those who are protected from Allah’s wrath.
❺ A Place Under the Shade of the Throne on the Day of Resurrection
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Translation: “There will be seven people whom Allah will shade under His Throne on the Day when there is no shade except His. Among them is the person who gives charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has spent.”
This hadith describes the highest form of sincerity — a good deed done solely for Allah, to the extent that the person himself does not take pride in it.
❻ Salvation from Hellfire and Honor in Paradise
Translation: “Indeed, you will taste the punishment, and you will be recompensed for your deeds, but Allah’s sincere servants are exempt from this. For them is a known provision; they will be in gardens of bliss, honored.”
This announcement is glad tidings of eternal success for the sincere ones.
❼ Success in This World and the Hereafter
Due to sincerity, a person attains peace of heart, honor, steadfastness in righteousness in this world, and Paradise in the Hereafter.
A sincere servant is beloved to Allah, his deeds are blessed, and he becomes beloved in the hearts of people.
Conclusion
Sincerity is the essence of faith and the foundation of worship.
The person who seeks Allah’s pleasure with pure intention is the one who is successful in the sight of Allah.
Whereas a hypocrite may receive praise in this world, but he has no share in the Hereafter.
Therefore, every believer must ensure that before every action, he corrects his intention,
after every act of worship, he asks Allah for acceptance,
and seeks refuge from hypocrisy.
May Allah grant us sincerity in all our deeds,
protect us from hypocrisy, selfishness, and show-off,
and include us among those sincere servants who are given the glad tidings of Paradise.
Ameen, O Lord of the Worlds.
