Sunnah Method for Iqāmah by the Mu’adhdhin (Caller of Adhān)
Source: Fatāwā ‘Ilmiyyah, Vol. 1 – Kitāb al-Adhān, p. 250
Question by: Nāyk Muḥammad Khosa, Mānjhī Pura
❖ Question:
We have heard that there is a ḥadīth stating that the person who gives the Adhān should also give the Iqāmah.
Is this statement correct according to Sharī‘ah?
❖ Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā ba‘d!
✔ The narration that the same person who gives the Adhān should also give the Iqāmah is found in:
📖 Sunan Abī Dāwūd (Ḥadīth 514)
📖 Jāmi‘ al-Tirmidhī (Ḥadīth 199)
However, the chain of narration is weak due to the presence of ‘Abd al-Raḥmān al-Afrīqī, who is regarded as a weak narrator.
📚 (See: Nīl al-Maqṣūd fī al-Ta‘līq ‘alā Sunan Abī Dāwūd, p. 183)
❖ Other Related Reports Are Also Weak:
◈ Sunan Abī Dāwūd (Ḥadīth 512, 513)
◈ Al-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Bayhaqī (1/399)
❖ However, There Is a Reliable Supporting Report:
Imām al-Bayhaqī (رحمه الله) has authentically transmitted that:
Sayyidunā Abū Maḥdhūrah (رضي الله عنه) once gave the Adhān and then gave the Iqāmah himself.
📖 (al-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Bayhaqī, 1/399)
Imām al-Bayhaqī (رحمه الله) presented this narration as a supporting evidence for the weaker report found in Sunan Abī Dāwūd (ḥadīth 514).
❖ Conclusion:
✔ It is preferable (afḍal) and better for the mu’adhdhin (the one who gave the Adhān) to also give the Iqāmah.
✔ However, if someone else gives the Iqāmah, it is still permissible and valid.
