❖ Ruling on Adhan for a Traveller

Question:
What is the ruling regarding Adhan for travellers?

Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

Although there is some difference of opinion in this matter, the correct and preponderant view is that it is also obligatory for travellers to give the Adhan.

The evidence for this is the statement of the Noble Prophet ﷺ to Mālik ibn al-Ḥuwayrith رضي الله عنه and his companions:

«إِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ لَکُمْ أَحَدُکُمْ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, al-Adhān, Bāb al-Adhān lil-Musāfirīn idhā kānū Jamāʿah wa-l-Iqāmah, ḥadīth: 631; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, al-Masājid, Bāb Man Aḥaq bi-l-Imāmah, ḥadīth: 674)

Translation:
“When the time for prayer arrives, let one of you give the Adhan for you.”

The Prophet ﷺ gave this instruction when Mālik ibn al-Ḥuwayrith رضي الله عنه and his companions, after visiting him, were returning to their homeland.

Furthermore, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never abandoned Adhan and Iqamah — whether in residence or during travel. In fact, during journeys, Adhan was always given, and the Prophet ﷺ himself would instruct Bilāl رضي الله عنه to give the Adhan.
