Distance for Qasr Prayer and the Ruling on Combining Prayers in Detail
(Source: Fatawa Arkan-e-Islam)
❖ At What Distance Can Qasr Prayer Be Performed?
Question:
What distance of travel makes it obligatory for a traveler to perform Qasr prayer? Is it permissible to combine (Jam’) the prayers without performing Qasr?
Answer:
Alhamdulillah, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾAmma baʿd!
The scholars have expressed different opinions regarding Qasr prayer. The details are as follows:
Determining the Distance for Qasr Prayer
① Some scholars have set the distance for Qasr prayer at approximately 83 km.
② Other scholars say that Qasr prayer is valid for any journey that is considered “travel” in the common understanding, even if it is less than 83 km.
If people do not consider a certain distance to be “travel,” then it will not be counted as Sharʿi travel — even if it is 100 km.
Opinion of Imam Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله):
◈ Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) also held the view that:
Allah ﷻ has not specified any fixed distance for Qasr prayer, nor has the Prophet ﷺ determined a specific distance.
Hadith:
Narrated by Anas bin Malik (رضي الله عنه):
«كأن النَّبيِّ إِذا خرج ثلاثة أميال أو ثلاثة فراسخ قصر الصلاة وصلَّى ركعتين»
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb Ṣalāt al-Musāfirīn, Ḥadīth 691)
Meaning:
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ traveled a distance of three miles or three Farsakhs, he would perform Qasr and pray only two rakʿahs.”
Acting According to Local Custom (‘Urf)
◈ If customs differ in various regions, there is no harm in following these customs, as some Imams and Mujtahid scholars have also adopted this approach.
◈ If the custom is clear and established in a place, it is valid to act upon it.
Relationship Between Jam’ and Qasr
Separate Rulings for Jam’ and Qasr:
◈ Even if Qasr is permissible, it does not mean Jam’ (combining two prayers) becomes obligatory.
◈ Jam’ is related to need and necessity, not to Qasr itself.
Examples of Jam’ in Daily Circumstances:
◈ In heavy rain when going to the masjid becomes difficult.
◈ During extreme cold and harsh winds.
◈ When there is a fear of loss or damage to property.
Hadith:
Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه):
«جمع رسول الله بين الظهر والعصر، والمغرب والعشاء من غير خوف ولا مطر»
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb Ṣalāt al-Musāfirīn, Ḥadīth 705)
Meaning:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ combined Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr, and Maghrib and ʿIshā’ in Madinah without fear or rain.”
Explanation of This Hadith:
◈ The Companions (رضي الله عنهم) asked why the Prophet ﷺ did so.
◈ Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) replied:
“So that the Ummah would not face hardship if they do not combine prayers.”
Sharʿi Principles:
◈ If refraining from Jam’ causes hardship, Jam’ is permissible.
◈ If there is no hardship, Jam’ is not allowed.
◈ During travel, hardship is often expected when avoiding Jam’, so it is permissible for a traveler to combine prayers, whether continuing the journey or staying temporarily.
When Should Jam’ and Qasr Be Performed?
◈ For a traveler — Jam’ is permissible.
◈ For a resident (non-traveler) — avoiding Jam’ is better.
◈ If a person stays in a city where congregational prayers are regularly established:
➤ He must pray in congregation.
➤ In this case, he neither combines nor shortens the prayer.
◈ If there is no congregation available:
➤ He may perform Qasr.
➤ He will only combine if there is a need.
Footnote / Research:
(1) When a distance of three Farsakhs (approximately 15 ancient miles) is established from Hadith, why should we revert to customs?
Therefore, the opinion of the respected Mufti (رحمه الله) is considered weaker in this regard.
The stronger opinion is that the travel distance is proven by Hadith — three Farsakhs — which, according to Hafiz Abdul Mannan Noorpoori (رحمه الله), equals 23 km.
This distance will be calculated after leaving the city limits.
Conclusion:
Regarding the distance for Qasr prayer, scholars hold differing views. Based on Hadith, three Farsakhs (around 23 km) can be taken as the Sharʿi standard.
The practice of Jam’ and Qasr should be applied according to necessity, circumstances, and local customs.
