❖ A Comparative Analysis of Science and Religion Based on Belief ❖
◈ Understanding Objective Realities
It is often assumed that we fully understand objective truths, particularly when we possess knowledge of material sciences. However, the reality is that most objective facts are not directly known to us.
In fact, our knowledge largely depends on scientific claims made by a small, elite group of specialists, not through our own observation or experimentation.
◈ Science and Empirical Realities
While it is said that science proves its claims through experimentation, in reality:
✔ In developing countries such as Pakistan, beyond high school science, hands-on experiments are rarely possible, especially in complex fields like:
- Astrophysics
- Nanophysics
- Quantum Physics
- Genetic Engineering
✔ Even in developed nations, only a handful of experts have access to data from high-end tools like particle accelerators or the Hubble Space Telescope.
◈ The Common Man’s Limited Access
The vast majority of people around the world cannot verify scientific claims due to lack of:
- Technical equipment
- Specialized training
- Practical opportunities
Thus, for an average person, believing in scientific statements is equivalent to having faith in them, as they cannot independently test or prove these claims.
◈ Scientific Theories vs. Religious Belief
✔ The Big Bang is widely accepted yet remains a theory, not something directly observed or tested.
✔ Hubble’s observations about the universe’s expansion, red shift, and cosmic background radiation are incomprehensible to the average layperson.
🟢 Then how is it different if:
- A Bedouin believes in the descent of Angel Jibril (AS), or
- A villager accepts the Miraj (Ascension) of the Prophet ﷺ,
compared to a modern man believing that man landed on the moon or that the universe is expanding?
◈ Modern Science and the Limits of Human Knowledge
Concepts like:
- M-Theory
- String Theory
- Multiverse Hypothesis
…are understood only by an extremely limited number of people.
For the rest of humanity, accepting these is no different than having blind faith in scientists, akin to the way religious people believe in the unseen.
◈ Difference Between Science and Technology
Often what is referred to as “experimental science” is in fact technology.
✔ We tend to mistake technological success (e.g., mobile phones, satellites) as proof of scientific truth in abstract fields, but this is a logical fallacy.
✔ Technology = Applied tools
✔ Science = Theoretical framework
The success of one doesn’t automatically validate the other.
◈ Faith in Scientists vs. Faith in Religion
The global majority believes in scientific claims just as people believe in religious doctrines:
- Without direct observation
- Without personal experimentation
- Based on trust in authority
Therefore, if philosophers deem religious faith as irrational, then blind faith in scientific claims without evidence is equally irrational.
❖ The Core Question: Science vs. Religious Faith
If we challenge religious belief on the basis that it is not empirically verifiable,
but at the same time accept unverified scientific theories,
then this is a clear case of intellectual contradiction.
