❖ Parallel Necessity of Religion and Science

Human life is composed of two essential dimensions: material and spiritual. While the material aspect guides humans toward fulfilling physical needs and advancement, the spiritual dimension draws them toward religion in pursuit of inner peace. It is an observable reality that as material progress increases, so too does spiritual thirst, thereby underscoring the persistent need for religion.

❖ The Limits of Science and the Necessity of Religion

Science is a method of reasoning rooted in observation and experimentation. In the modern age, science has propelled the world toward material progress. However, in its early stages—particularly in the West—a perceived conflict arose between science and religion. Over time, it became clear that science and religion belong to separate domains. Science does not interfere in religious matters, while religion provides constructive influence upon science. Thus, there is no inherent contradiction between the two.

❖ Historical Background of the Science-Religion Conflict

The clash between science and religion was largely a phenomenon of the 18th and 19th centuries. Scientific discoveries during this era led some to believe that religion was obsolete and that belief in God was unnecessary. They claimed the universe functioned purely on natural laws, analyzable through science. Conversely, the Church had incorporated certain philosophical ideas into religion, which eventually crumbled before scientific evidence. This mismatch gave rise to conflict between science and religion.

❖ Contemporary Reconciliation Between Science and Religion

Today, it is evident that science and religion operate in separate realms and are not inherently contradictory. Science explains the natural laws of the universe, but it cannot answer why these laws exist. Religion addresses these fundamental existential questions. Therefore, despite scientific advancement, the need for religion remains—and becomes even more urgent when humans experience spiritual voids.

❖ A Balanced Path Between Religion and Science

Science must engage in reconciliation with religion to benefit from ethical and spiritual guidance. Such harmony can save humanity from the very issues science has contributed to—such as nuclear weapons and environmental pollution.

❖ Islam and Science: No Contradiction

Islam encourages scientific inquiry and exploration and sees no contradiction between religion and science. Islam’s objective is to guide humanity toward God through contemplation and to urge adherence to His commands. This is true human progress.

❖ Conclusion

There is no real contradiction between science and religion. Both can serve humanity within their respective domains and act as complementary forces in the pursuit of a meaningful life.
