Question

Is it Sharʿīly proven to say “تَقَبَّلَ اللَّهُ مِنَّا وَمِنْكُمْ“ to each other after the Eid prayer?

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd:

1 – Mawdūʿ and Ḍaʿīf Marfūʿ Reports

First Report

  • Sources: al-Kāmil (Ibn ʿAdī, 6/2274), al-Majruḥīn (Ibn Ḥibbān, 2/301), al-Sunan al-Kubrā (al-Bayhaqī, 3/319), al-ʿIlal al-Mutanāhiyah (Ibn al-Jawzī, 1/476 – “This ḥadīth is not ṣaḥīḥ”), al-Tadwīn fī Akhbār Qazwīn (1/342), Silsilah al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfah (al-Albānī, 12/385–386, no. 5666).
  • Fabricated due to Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-ʿAlāʾ al-Shāmī.
  • Imām al-Dāraquṭnī: kadhdhāb (liar).
  • Ibn Ḥibbān: used to fabricate ḥadīths upon the people of Shām.
  • Al-Ḥākim: narrated fabricated ḥadīths from al-Walīd ibn Muslim and Suwayd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.

Second Report

  • Sources: al-Sunan al-Kubrā (al-Bayhaqī, 3/319–320), Amālī Ibn Shamʿūn (p. 277), al-Majruḥīn (Ibn Ḥibbān, 2/149), al-ʿIlal al-Mutanāhiyah (2/57–58 – “Not ṣaḥīḥ”), Tārīkh Dimashq (36/69).
  • Weak due to ʿAbd al-Khāliq ibn Zayd ibn Wāqid.
  • Imām al-Bukhārī: munkar al-ḥadīth.
  • The chain is also munqaṭiʿ (Makhūl did not meet ʿUbādah).
  • Ibn Ḥajar declared it weak (Fatḥ al-Bārī, 2/446).

2 – Authentic Athār of Ṣaḥābah, Tābiʿīn, and Aʾimmah

① Abū Umāmah and Wāthilah ibn al-Asqaʿ رضي الله عنهما

  • When met on Eid day, they would say: Taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum, and respond: Wa minnā wa minkum.
  • Chain: Authentic (Mukhtaṣar Ikhtilāf al-Fuqahāʾ, 4/385).

② Jubayr ibn Nufayr رحمه الله

  • The Companions, when meeting on Eid, would say: Taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum.
  • Chain: Ḥasan; authenticated by Ibn Ḥajar (Fatḥ al-Bārī, 2/446).

③ Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr al-Saksakī رحمه الله

  • Witnessed ʿAbdullāh ibn Busr al-Māzinī رضي الله عنه, Khālid ibn Maʿdān, Rāshid ibn Saʿd, and others exchanging this greeting on Eid.
  • Chain: Ḥasan (Tārīkh Dimashq, 26/106).

④ Imām Mālik رحمه الله

  • When asked, he replied: “This is the practice in Madīnah, and we consider it permissible.”
  • Chain: Ḥasan (Kitāb al-Thiqāt, Ibn Ḥibbān, 9/90).

⑤ Imām Shuʿbah ibn al-Ḥajjāj رحمه الله

  • On Eid day, Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd greeted him with Taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum.
  • No valid criticism on the chain (Kitāb al-Duʿāʾ, al-Ṭabarānī, 2/1334, no. 929).

⑥ Practice of Later Scholars

  • Imām al-Ṭaḥāwī noted his teachers and contemporaries (Bakār ibn Qutaybah, al-Muzanī, Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, Abū Jaʿfar ibn Abī ʿImrān) responding with this same greeting when greeted on Eid.
    (Mukhtaṣar Ikhtilāf al-ʿUlamāʾ, 4/385)

Conclusion

  • The marfūʿ aḥādīth are weak or fabricated.
  • However, the practice is authentically established from the Companions, Tābiʿīn, and great Imāms.
  • Therefore, saying “Taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum” on Eid day is permissible and mustaḥabb (recommended).
