❖ A Martyr Is to Be Shrouded and Buried in the Very Clothes in Which He Was Martyred
Islam has granted the martyr (shahīd) a special status, and among the rulings exclusive to martyrs is that they are not given a new kafan, nor are they washed. Instead, they are buried as they are, in the clothes soaked with their blood.
❖ ➊ Ḥadīth of ʿAbdullāh ibn Thaʿlabah رضي الله عنه:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said regarding the martyrs of Uḥud:
«زملوهم في ثيابهم»
“Wrap them in their clothes.”
And in another narration:
«زملوهم بدمائهم»
“Wrap them in their blood-stained garments.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Nasāʾī 1892 – Kitāb al-Janāʾiz: Bāb Muwārāh al-Shahīd fī Dammih, Musnad Aḥmad 5/431, al-Nasāʾī 4/78]
❖ ➋ Ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed regarding the martyrs of Uḥud:
«ادفنوهم بدمائهم وثيابهم»
“Bury them in their blood and clothes.”
He also instructed that metal and leather be removed from them.
[Ḍaʿīf: Abū Dāwūd 686, 3134, Ibn Mājah 1515, Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl 709]
Though this narration is weak, it is supported by stronger narrations affirming the same principle.
❖ Scholarly Views:
- Imām al-Shawkānī رحمه الله:
The apparent meaning of the Prophet’s ﷺ command to bury the martyr in the same clothes is that it is obligatory (wājib).
[Nayl al-Awṭār 2/692] - Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله:
It is not permissible to remove the clothes in which the martyr was killed; he must be buried in them as they are.
[Aḥkām al-Janāʾiz, p. 80]
✔ Summary of Rulings:
✅ A battlefield martyr:
- Is not washed
- Is not given a fresh shroud
- Is buried in the same clothes he was martyred in
- If any items like armor or leather are on him, they may be removed
📌 This practice reflects the honor of martyrdom and the sanctity of the blood shed in the path of Allah.
