❖ Reciting After Surah al-Fātiḥah in Silent Prayers

(Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām)

Question:

If a person in a silent (sirri) prayer has recited Surah al-Fātiḥah and another Surah after it, but the Imam has not yet gone into Rukūʿ, should he remain silent or continue reciting?

Answer:

Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾAmma baʿd!

If the follower (muqtadī) has completed the recitation of Surah al-Fātiḥah and another Surah, and the Imam has not yet gone into Rukūʿ, he should not remain silent. Rather, he should continue reciting until the Imam goes into Rukūʿ.

◈ This applies even in the two rakʿahs after the first tashahhud.
◈ Remaining silent in Salah is only allowed when the follower is listening to the Imam’s recitation.
