❖ Question
Is it permissible to offer the funeral prayer in the courtyard of a mosque?
❖ Answer
Yes, it is permissible to offer the funeral prayer in a mosque. The Prophet (ﷺ) himself did so. The funeral prayers of Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) and Umar (رضي الله عنه) were also offered inside the mosque. And Allah knows best.
❖ Explanation
According to authentic Hadith, performing the funeral prayer in the mosque is valid and permissible.
In Muntaqa al-Akhbar, it is reported:
Narrated Aishah (رضي الله عنها):
“When Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas passed away, she said, ‘Bring his body into the mosque so I may offer prayer over him.’ Some people objected to this. She replied, ‘Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) offered the funeral prayer for the sons of Bayda — Suhail and his brother — inside the mosque.'”
(Narrated by Muslim)
Another narration reads:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not pray the funeral prayer for Suhail ibn Bayda except inside the mosque.”
(Narrated by the group, including Bukhari)
This Hadith confirms that the Prophet (ﷺ) offered the funeral prayer inside the mosque. Moreover, the funeral prayers for Abu Bakr and Umar (رضي الله عنهما) were also conducted in the mosque, indicating a consensus among the Companions on its permissibility.
Fath al-Bari mentions:
“It has been narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah and others that Umar (رضي الله عنه) offered the funeral prayer for Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) in the mosque, and that Suhaib (رضي الله عنه) offered the funeral prayer for Umar (رضي الله عنه) in the mosque. In one narration, it is stated: ‘The body was placed inside the mosque in front of the pulpit,’ which implies consensus on the permissibility of this practice.”
