Shar‘i Ruling on Abandoning Congregational Prayer After Hearing the Adhan Without a Valid Excuse
Based on: Fatawa of the Scholars of Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Vol. 1

❖ Question

Is the prayer of one who, without any valid excuse, offers it alone after hearing the Adhan considered valid in Shari‘ah?

❖ Answer

Deliberately abandoning the congregational prayer after hearing the Adhan without a valid excuse is not acceptable in Shari‘ah.
There are clear Ahadith and statements from the Companions emphasizing the importance of congregational prayer and condemning its abandonment in the strongest terms.

❖ Evidences from the Sunnah and the Companions

1. Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ

“مَنْ سَمِعَ النِّدَاءَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ فَلَا صَلَاةَ لَهُ إِلَّا مِنْ عُذْرٍ“
(Sunan al-Daraqutni, Mishkat al-Masabih)

Translation: “Whoever hears the call to prayer and does not respond, his prayer is not valid—unless he has a legitimate excuse.”

2. Incident of the Blind Companion

When the blind Companion Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum (رضي الله عنه) asked for an exemption due to the danger of the path, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“هَلْ تَسْمَعْ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَحَيَّ هَلًا“
(Sunan al-Nasa’i, Sunan Abu Dawud)

Translation: “Do you hear ‘Hayya ‘ala al-Salah’ and ‘Hayya ‘ala al-Falah’?” He said: Yes. The Prophet ﷺ replied: Then come (to the prayer).”

3. Warning from Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (رضي الله عنه)

He said:

“وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنَا وَمَا يَتَخَلَّفُ عَنْهَا إِلَّا مُنَافِقٌ بَيِّنُ النِّفَاقِ“
(Sunan Abu Dawud)

Translation: “In our time, only the one known for clear hypocrisy would stay away from the congregational prayer.”

4. Obligation of Congregation Even During Battle

Even in the midst of battle, Salat al-Khawf (prayer of fear) is legislated in congregation as mentioned in the Qur’an — a clear indication that congregation is even more obligatory in times of peace.

❖ Sayings of the Salaf (Pious Predecessors)

✔ Ata ibn Abi Rabah: “After hearing the Adhan, no one is allowed to abandon the congregation regardless of their situation.”
✔ Imam al-Awza‘i: “It is impermissible to obey anyone—even one’s own father—if it means missing Friday or congregational prayer.”
✔ Abu Thawr: “Congregational prayer is obligatory, and there is no allowance to miss it in times of peace.”

❖ Severe Condemnation for Abandoning Congregation

Numerous narrations contain stern warnings for those who abandon the congregation.
They are likened to hypocrites, and some reports use phrases such as:

“لَضَلَلْتُمْ“ – “You would go astray.”
“لَکَفَرْتُمْ“ – “You would become disbelievers.”

❖ Summary

✔ It is not acceptable in Shari‘ah to pray alone after hearing the Adhan without a valid excuse.
✔ Congregational prayer is obligatory, as confirmed by Hadith and the statements of the righteous predecessors.
✔ A Muslim must give due importance to attending congregation and avoid the severe sin of abandoning it without excuse.
