Shar‘i Ruling on Salat al-Janazah and Ghusl When Only Parts of a Body Are Found

Taken from: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām

Question

If a person dies in an accident such as a vehicle collision, fire, or fall from a height, and the entire body is not recovered — only some parts such as a hand, foot, or fragments of the head are found — should Salat al-Janazah be performed for these body parts? And should they be given ghusl?

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd:

There are two separate scenarios, each with a different ruling:

① If the Janazah Prayer Has Already Been Performed for the Deceased

  • If Salat al-Janazah has already been performed for the deceased and they have been buried, but at that time some body parts (e.g., foot, hand) were missing and are later found:
◈ These recovered parts will be buried without performing another Janazah prayer.
◈ Reason: The Janazah prayer for the person has already been offered.

Example:
If a person is buried after Janazah prayer without their foot (because it was not found at the time), and later the foot is recovered, it will simply be buried without a new Janazah.

② If the Complete Body Cannot Be Found

  • If due to an accident the complete body cannot be found, and only some parts (e.g., head, hand, foot) are recovered:
◈ These parts will be washed (ghusl).
◈ They will be shrouded (kafan).
◈ Salat al-Janazah will be performed for them.
◈ Afterwards, they will be buried.

Conclusion

  • If the complete body exists or the Janazah has already been offered, no separate Janazah is to be performed for later recovered parts.
  • If the complete body is missing and only some parts are found, then ghusl, kafan, and Salat al-Janazah are required before burial.
