❖ Question:
Can a well for a mosque be constructed using Zakat funds?
❖ Answer:
Among the categories of Zakat recipients mentioned in the Qur’an, one of the terms is “فِي سَبِيلِ اللّٰهِ” (in the path of Allah). The majority of commentators interpret this term specifically to refer to the necessities of Jihad.
However, some scholars interpret this term more broadly to include all righteous deeds. Based on this broader interpretation, some scholars consider it permissible to spend Zakat funds on mosques and similar religious causes.
The humble author also regards this opinion as correct. Therefore, in the case mentioned, it is permissible to construct a well for a mosque using Zakat money.
“Allah knows best.”
