❖ Question
Should the imam recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah and other verses aloud or silently in the funeral prayer (Ṣalāt al-Janāzah)?
(Muḥammad Shāhid Memon)
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
✦ Ruling ①: Silent Recitation (Sirrī) is Preferable
❖ If all the followers (muqtadīs) are capable of reciting Sūrah al-Fātiḥah, then it is preferable for the imam to recite silently.
✔ This preserves the original silent nature of the funeral prayer as generally practiced.
✦ Ruling ②: Loud Recitation (Jahrī) is Permissible for Teaching
❖ If the followers are unfamiliar with the recitation of Sūrah al-Fātiḥah, then reciting aloud becomes preferable for the purpose of teaching.
✔ In such a case, the imam recites aloud to guide the congregation and ensure correct recitation.
✦ Reconciliation of Evidences
✔ By adopting this approach, all the varying narrations and scholarly views are harmonized without contradiction.
