Islamic Ruling on Wine Made from Grapes: Consensus and Evidences

Source: Fatāwā Amonpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amonpuri

Question:
What is the Islamic ruling regarding wine made from grapes?

Answer:
Wine made from grapes is unanimously ḥarām. Both its small and large amounts are prohibited. Its prohibition is established through authentic ahadith and the consensus (ijmāʿ) of the Ummah.

❀ Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar رحمه الله (d. 852H) said:
قد انعقد الإجماع على أن القليل من الخمر المتخذ من العنب يحرم قليله وكثيره.
“Consensus has been established that wine made from grapes is forbidden, both in small and large amounts.”
