Prohibition of Announcing Death and Wailing in Islam
✍ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
❖ Declaring a Death Publicly and Wailing is 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺 (Prohibited)
In Islamic teachings, publicly announcing death in the manner of the pre-Islamic era and wailing over the deceased is strictly prohibited.
◈ Definition of Nʿay (النعي)
Naʿy refers to the announcement or broadcasting of death.
📘 [Al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ: p. 1726, Al-Nihāyah by Ibn al-Athīr: 5/85–86]
◈ Prohibition of Public Death Announcement
➊ Narrated from Ḥudhayfah رضي الله عنه:
إن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان ينهى عن النعي
“The Prophet ﷺ used to forbid public announcements of death.”
📚 [Ḥasan: Ṣaḥīḥ Tirmidhī: 786, Kitāb al-Janā’iz: Bāb Karāhah al-Naʿy, Tirmidhī: 986, Aḥmad: 5/406, Ibn Mājah: 1476, Bayhaqī: 4/74, Ibn Abī Shaybah: 3/274]
◈ What Kind of Announcement is Forbidden?
The forbidden Naʿy is the pre-Islamic practice, where people would be sent out to announce the death loudly in streets and at doorsteps, often accompanied by wailing and exaggerated praise of the deceased’s virtues.
📘 [Fatḥ al-Bārī: 3/453]
◈ Permissibility of Simple Death Notification
Merely informing others of someone’s death, without theatrics or wailing, is permissible and has precedent in the Sunnah:
➊ The Prophet ﷺ informed the Companions about the death of Najāshī.
📚 [Bukhārī: 1333, Kitāb al-Janā’iz: Bāb al-Takbīr ʿala al-Janāzah Arbaʿan, Muslim: 951]
➋ Regarding the woman who used to sweep the Masjid, the Prophet ﷺ said:
آفلا كنتم آذنتموني
“Why did you not inform me?”
📚 [Bukhārī: 1337, Kitāb al-Janā’iz: Bāb al-Ṣalāh ʿala al-Qabr Baʿda al-Dafn]
➌ The Prophet ﷺ informed about the martyrdom of three Companions during the Battle of Mu’tah.
📚 [Bukhārī: 4262, Kitāb al-Maghāzī: Bāb Ghazwat Mu’tah min Ard al-Shām]
◈ Summary from Ibn al-ʿArabī رحمه الله:
Based on the collected narrations, three rulings are derived:
① Informing family, close companions, and righteous people is Sunnah
② Calling large groups for show or pride is makrūh (disliked)
③ Announcements involving wailing or emotional outbursts are ḥarām (prohibited)
📘 [ʿĀriḍat al-Aḥwadhī: 4/206]
Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله also confirms that death notification is allowed, provided it is not done in a Jāhilī (pre-Islamic) manner.
📘 [Ahkām al-Janā’iz: p. 45]
❖ What is Wailing (Niyāḥah)?
Niyāḥah refers to loud, emotional lamentation, which includes:
- Enumerating the qualities and virtues of the deceased in a dramatic tone
- Crying and wailing loudly
- Screaming while recalling the good deeds and status of the deceased
📘 [Subul al-Salām: 2/776]
◈ Prohibition of Wailing:
➊ Umm ʿAṭiyyah رضي الله عنها said:
أخذ علينا رسول الله أن لا ننوح
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took an oath from us at the time of bayʿah that we will not wail.”
📚 [Bukhārī: 1306; Kitāb al-Janā’iz: Bāb Mā Yunhā ʿan al-Nawḥ wa al-Bukāʾ, Muslim: 936, Abū Dāwūd: 3127]
➋ Narrated from Abū Mūsā رضي الله عنه:
فإن رسول الله برئ من الصالقة والحالقة والشاقة
“The Prophet ﷺ declared himself free from the one who wails loudly, shaves her head in grief, or tears her clothes during calamity.”
📚 [Muslim: 104; Kitāb al-Īmān: Bāb Taḥrīm Ḍarb al-Khudūd, Bukhārī: 1296, Abū Dāwūd: 3130, Nasā’ī: 4/20]
Definitions of Ṣāliqah, Ḥāliqah, and Shāqqah are taken from:
📘 [Jāmiʿ al-Uṣūl: 11/104]
➌ In a Hadith narrated by Abū Mālik al-Ashʿarī رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
النائحة إذا لم تتب قبل موتها تقام يوم القيامة وعليها سربال من قطران ودرع من جرب
“The woman who wails, if she does not repent before her death, will be raised on the Day of Judgment wearing a gown of molten pitch and a coat of scabs.”
📚 [Muslim: 934; Kitāb al-Janā’iz: Bāb al-Tashdīd fī al-Niyāḥah, Aḥmad: 5/342]

✔ Simple notification of death, free from wailing and prideful display, is permissible and even recommended.
✔ Wailing (نَوحہ) in any form is strictly forbidden in Islam and carries severe warnings in the Hereafter.
