Prohibition of Seeking Knowledge Without the Pleasure of Allah
① Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrates, the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
من تعلم علما مما يبتغىٰ به وجه الله لا يتعلمه إلا ليصيب به عرضا من الدنيا لم يجد عرف الجنة يوم القيامة
“Whoever acquires knowledge for the sake of worldly wealth and possessions, without seeking the pleasure of Allah through it, will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Judgment.”
② Sayyiduna Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما narrates, the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
من تعلم علما لغير الله أو أراد به غير الله فليتبوأ مقعده فى النار
“Whoever acquires knowledge for any purpose other than the pleasure of Allah, or intends anything other than Allah’s pleasure through it, then he has made his abode in Hell.”
③ Sayyiduna Ka’b bin Malik رضي الله عنه narrates, I heard the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم say:
من طلب العلم ليجاري به العلماء، أو يماري به السفهاء، ويصرف وجوه الناس إليه، أدخله الله النار
“Whoever acquires knowledge to argue with the scholars, or to show superiority over ignorant people, and to attract their attention towards himself, Allah will admit him into Hell.”
