❖ Permissibility of Combining Prayers Due to Valid Excuses
Written by: Imran Ayub Lahori
✦ Evidence of Combining Prayers During Travel
❖ Hadith of Anas (رضي الله عنه):
“كان النبى إذا ارتحل قبل أن تزيغ الشمس أخر الظهر إلى وقت العصر ثم يجمع بينهما، وإذا زاغت صلى الظهر ثم ركب”
“If the Prophet (ﷺ) set out on a journey before the sun had declined, he would delay Dhuhr till the time of Asr and then combine the two. But if the sun had already declined, he would perform Dhuhr and then depart.”
Another narration states:
“صلى الظهر والعصر”
“(He would combine) Dhuhr and Asr together before departing.”
[Sahih: Irwa’ al-Ghalil 3/28; Abu Dawood 1206; Tirmidhi 553; Daraqutni 1/392; Ahmad 5/237]
✦ Evidence of Combining Prayers Without Apparent Excuse
❖ Hadith of Ibn ‘Abbas
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) combined Dhuhr and Asr, and Maghrib and Isha in Madinah without fear or rain.”
In another version:
“من غير خوف ولا سفر”
“Without fear or travel.”
[Muwatta 1/144; Muslim 705; Abu Dawood 1210; Nasa’i 601–602; Ibn Khuzaymah 971; Ahmad 1/283]
✦ Forms of Combining (الجمع بین الصلاتین)
➊ Real Combination (جمع حقيقي):
When one prayer is performed within the time of the other, e.g., performing Asr along with Dhuhr during Dhuhr’s time.
✔ Only permissible for travelers.
➋ Apparent Combination (جمع صوري):
One prayer is delayed to its latest time and the other is performed at its earliest time, making it appear as if both were combined, but each remains within its own prescribed time.
This is the correct understanding of the Hadith wherein the Prophet (ﷺ) combined prayers without fear, rain, or travel.
❖ Hadith Clarifying This:
“صليت مع النبي الظهر والعصر جميعا، والمغرب والعشاء جميعا، أخر الظهر وعجل العصر، وأخر المغرب وعجل العشاء”
“I prayed with the Prophet (ﷺ) Dhuhr and Asr together, and Maghrib and Isha together. He delayed Dhuhr and prayed Asr early; likewise, delayed Maghrib and prayed Isha early.”
[Muslim 1152 – Kitab Salat al-Musafirin wa Qasriha]
❖ Scholarly Endorsement:
✔ Shawkani (رحمه الله) supports this view.
[Nayl al-Awtar 2/227]
✔ Abdur Rahman Mubarakpuri (رحمه الله) gives preference to this explanation.
[Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi 1/585]
❖ Combining Prayers in Rain and Sickness
Some scholars permitted combining prayers in rain or illness, similar to the way they are combined during travel.
✔ Imam Ahmad, Imam Shafi‘i, and Imam Ishaq (رحمهم الله) held this view.
However, according to the most authentic opinion from Imam Shafi‘i, combining prayers for illness is not permissible.
[Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi 1/587; Fath al-Bari 2/231]
✦ Preferred View (راجح)
✔ Combining prayers in rain or illness the same way as in travel (real combination) is not permissible.
If it were, the Prophet (ﷺ) would have done so himself in illness, or instructed sick companions likewise — yet no such report exists.
However, apparent combination (جمع صوري) is permissible in such cases.
[As-Sayl al-Jarrar 1/193]
❖ Hanafi Position
The Hanafi madhhab does not permit combining prayers, even during travel.
Their evidence relies on weak narrations that are not reliable and cannot serve as proof.
[Fayd al-Qadir 6/113; Da‘if Tirmidhi 28; Al-Da‘ifah 4581; Da‘if al-Jami‘ 5546]
✔ Conclusion:
◈ Combining prayers during travel is established and valid.
◈ Without travel, only apparent combination (جمع صوري) is supported by evidence.
◈ In rain or illness, apparent combination is acceptable, but real combination (one prayer in another’s time) is not supported by sound Sunnah.
◈ Hanafi opposition to all forms of combination is based on weak proofs and not preferred.
