❖ Question:

How many obligatory prayers are there in a day and night?

✦ Summary Answer:

There are five obligatory prayers in a 24-hour period. This is established through authentic ḥadīths, Qur’anic indications, the consensus of the Ummah, and the practical Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

✿ ① The Prophet’s ﷺ Instruction to Muʿādh ibn Jabal

When the Prophet ﷺ sent Muʿādh ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه to Yemen, he instructed him:

“Inform them that Allah has obligated upon them five prayers in their day and night.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 7372, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 19/121)

✿ ② Initial Obligation: Two Rakʿāt for Each Prayer

Narrated by ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها:

“When prayer was first prescribed, it consisted of two rakʿāt in both residence and travel. Later, the prayer in travel remained as it was, while the prayer in residence was increased.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 350, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 655/1570)

✿ ③ Gradual Increase in Prayer Units After Hijrah

Another narration from ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها:

“Prayer was initially two rakʿāt. Then, after the Prophet ﷺ migrated, it was increased to four rakʿāt (for residents), while the travel prayer remained unchanged.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 3935)

✿ ④ Statement of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما

“Allah has prescribed prayer through the tongue of your Prophet ﷺ: four rakʿāt in residence, two in travel, and one in fear.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 687/1575)

✿ ⑤ Specific Case of Maghrib and Changes in Other Prayers

Narrated by ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها:

“Prayer was initially two rakʿāt for each, except Maghrib, which was three. Then Allah completed Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, and ʿIshā to four rakʿāt in residence, while the travel prayers remained in their original form.”
(Musnad Aḥmad: 26869, other edition: 26338 – Ḥasan li dhātih)

✿ ⑥ After Settling in Madinah: Additional Units

Also from ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها:

“Prayers in both travel and residence were two rakʿāt. When the Prophet ﷺ settled in Madinah, two rakʿāt were added to the prayers in residence. Fajr remained two due to long recitation, and Maghrib remained three as it is the witr (odd-numbered prayer) of the day.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān: 2727, Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Khuzaymah: 944 – Ḥasan isnād)

✿ ⑦ Indication in the Qur’an

While explicit names of the five prayers aren’t always stated together, they are indirectly mentioned:

✔ Fajr & ʿIshā — Referenced in Sūrah an-Nūr (58)
✔ Ẓuhr — Referenced in Sūrah Banī Isrā’īl, Āyah 78

Refer to al-Umm by Imām ash-Shāfiʿī (1/68) for elaboration.

✿ ⑧ Ijmāʿ (Consensus of the Ummah)

Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥazm رحمه الله said:

“There is consensus (ijmāʿ) that five prayers are obligatory. Also agreed upon: two rakʿāt for Fajr in all conditions, three for Maghrib, and four for Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, and ʿIshā during residence and security.”
(Marātib al-Ijmāʿ, pp. 24–25)

❖ Detailed Count of Prayer Units

✦ In Residence (Hadr):

➊ Fajr – 2 Rakʿāt
➋ Ẓuhr – 4 Rakʿāt
➌ ʿAṣr – 4 Rakʿāt
➍ Maghrib – 3 Rakʿāt
➎ ʿIshā – 4 Rakʿāt

✦ In Travel (Safar):

➊ Fajr – 2 Rakʿāt
➋ Ẓuhr – 2 Rakʿāt
➌ ʿAṣr – 2 Rakʿāt
➍ Maghrib – 3 Rakʿāt
➎ ʿIshā – 2 Rakʿāt

✦ In Fear (Khauf):

➊ Fajr – 2 Rakʿāt
➋ Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, ʿIshā – 1 Rakʿah
➌ Maghrib – 3 Rakʿāt

❖ Rule Regarding Qasr (Shortening the Prayer During Travel)

✔ Qasr is more virtuous, though praying in full is still valid.

This is proven from authentic narrations and practices of the Companions.

❖ Consensus on Prayer Timings

Imām Ibn al-Mundhir (d. 318 AH) wrote:

✔ Ẓuhr: Obligatory at the time of zawāl (sun’s zenith)
✔ Maghrib: After sunset
✔ Fajr: At true dawn (ṣubḥ ṣādiq)
(Kitāb al-Ijmāʿ, translated version, p. 24)

✅ Research Summary:

From sound aḥādīth and consensus, it is established that five daily prayers are obligatory for every mukallaf Muslim. Their timings and rakʿāt are also firmly established by authentic Sunnah and the agreement of scholars.
