❖ Giving Ghusl to a Muslim Deceased Is a Collective Obligation (Farḍ al-Kifāyah)
It is compulsory upon the living Muslims to ensure that a deceased Muslim is given ritual washing (ghusl). If a group fulfills this duty, the obligation is lifted from the rest; otherwise, all share in the sin.
➊ Clear Command of the Prophet ﷺ to Wash the Deceased
❀ Narration of Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما:
Regarding a man who died in iḥrām after falling from his riding animal, the Prophet ﷺ said:
«اغسلوه بماء وسدر…»
“Wash him with water and lotus leaves…”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1849 – Kitāb al-Ḥajj, Muslim 1206, Abū Dāwūd 3238, al-Tirmidhī 951, Ibn Mājah 3084, al-Nasāʾī 5/195]
➋ Narration of Umm ʿAṭiyyah رضي الله عنها:
When the Prophet ﷺ’s daughter passed away, he instructed:
«اغسلنها ثلاثًا أو خمسًا أو أكثر من ذلك»
“Wash her three, five, or more times…”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1235, Muslim 939, Abū Dāwūd 3142, al-Tirmidhī 990, Ibn Mājah 1458, Aḥmad 5/84, al-Nasāʾī 4/31]
These direct instructions from the Prophet ﷺ demonstrate the religious obligation to perform ghusl for the deceased.
❖ Scholarly Consensus and Analysis
- Imām al-Nawawī رحمه الله:
Meyyit ko ghusl dena farḍ al-kifāyah hai aur is par ijmāʿ hai.
[al-Majmūʿ 5/112, Sharḥ Muslim 3/7] - Imām Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī رحمه الله:
Criticized the claim of ijmāʿ due to opposing views among Mālikiyyah.
[Fatḥ al-Bārī 2/125] - Imām al-Qurṭubī رحمه الله:
Ghusl is Sunnah, not obligatory — according to preferred opinion within the Mālikī school.
[al-Mufhim 2/592] - Imām Ibn al-ʿArabī رحمه الله:
Refuted this and declared that the command to perform ghusl is mutawātir (mass-transmitted) in word and deed.
[Quoted in Fatḥ al-Bārī 2/162]
❖ Majority View (Jumhūr): Ghusl Is Obligatory
- Jumhūr (Majority of Scholars):
Giving ghusl to the deceased is wājib (obligatory).
[Nayl al-Awṭār 2/675] - Amīr al-Ṣanʿānī رحمه الله:
Explicitly states that the ḥadīth “اغسلوه بماء وسدر“ is a clear proof for the obligation of ghusl.
[Subul al-Salām 2/728] - Imām Ibn Ḥazm رحمه الله:
Categorically declared it as farḍ.
[al-Muḥallā bi’l-Āthār 3/333] - Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān رحمه الله:
Described the obligation of ghusl for the deceased as a matter of agreement.
[al-Rawḍah al-Nadiyyah 1/406] - Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله:
Also upheld the obligatory nature of this act.
[Aḥkām al-Janāʾiz, p. 64]
✔ Summary of Ruling:
✅ Giving ghusl to a Muslim deceased is farḍ al-kifāyah, proven through:
- Clear ḥadīths of command
- Consensus of majority of scholars
- Consistent Prophetic practice
❌ The view that it is merely Sunnah (as held by some Mālikī scholars) is weak and opposed by stronger evidence.
