❖ Was There Consensus Among the Companions on Offering Fajr Prayer in Brightness?

📚 Source: Fatawa Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

Was there a consensus among the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) to offer Fajr prayer during brightness (i.e., after daylight begins)?

❖ Answer:

The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to offer Fajr prayer in darkness.
There is no authentic narration proving that any Companion regularly offered Fajr in brightness, let alone that there was a consensus (ijma‘) on doing so.

❖ Cited Statement and Its Evaluation

❀ It is reported that Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i (رحمه الله) said:

“The Companions of Muhammad ﷺ never agreed on anything as much as they agreed on offering Fajr in brightness.”
📘 (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, 1/322; Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar by al-Tahawi, 1/193)

❖ Authenticity of the Report

The chain of this narration is weak due to the following reasons:

① Sufyan al-Thawri and Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman are mudallis, and neither of them clearly stated that they heard this directly (lack of tasreeh bis-samaa‘).

② The chain in Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar is also weak due to ‘An‘anah of al-A‘mash, another known mudallis.

❖ Conclusion:

There is no established consensus of the Companions on offering Fajr in brightness.
In fact, the authentic and consistent practice of the Sahabah (رضي الله عنهم) was to offer Fajr prayer in darkness, following the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

✔ Key Point:
The claim of ijma‘ (consensus) among the Companions on offering Fajr during brightness is unfounded, and the authentic practice is to pray it in darkness, as practiced by the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions.
