✿ Question:
I keep sleeping and fail to wake up for Fajr prayer. Is this due to the influence of Shaytan? What is the solution?
✿ Answer:
Neglecting Salat al-Fajr (the Dawn Prayer) is a serious issue and one of the signs of spiritual weakness. According to the teachings of Islam, persistent failure to perform Fajr on time, especially due to laziness or oversleeping, can indeed be attributed to the whispers and influence of Shaytan (Satan).
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) that he said:
“ذكر النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم رجلا نام ليلة حتى أصبح قال: ذاك رجل .بال الشيطان فى أذنيه. أو قال: أذنه”
“The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) mentioned a man who slept through the night until morning (missing Fajr). He said: ‘This is a man in whose ears Shaytan has urinated,’ or he said, ‘in his ear.’”
[Sahih al-Bukhari: Hadith 3097; Sahih Muslim: Hadith 774]
This metaphor used by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) indicates an extreme form of heedlessness and spiritual degradation. Shaytan does not just whisper to such a person, but marks them with humiliation, showing how far they have strayed from obedience.
✿ Practical Solutions to Overcome This Negligence:
❶ Strong Intention: Resolve firmly every night to wake up for Fajr, seeking Allah’s help and mercy.
❷ Dua before Sleeping: Recite supplications and Qur’anic verses before going to bed for protection from Shaytan.
❸ Early Bedtime: Go to sleep early to ensure physical energy and mental alertness at dawn.
❹ Alarm and Accountability: Use multiple alarms and request family members to wake you up.
❺ Repent and Seek Forgiveness: Regularly make Tawbah (repentance) and ask Allah to keep you steadfast in your prayers.
Conclusion:
Yes, persistent failure to pray Fajr is a consequence of Shaytan’s influence, as emphasized in authentic Hadith. However, with effort, intention, and reliance on Allah, one can overcome this trap and revive the spiritual discipline of praying Fajr regularly, which is among the most rewarding acts in Islam.
