❀ The Universe, Natural Laws, and the Truth of Religion ❀

✿ Science vs. Religion — A Misguided Assumption
Some claim that science has rendered religion obsolete by revealing the laws of nature that govern the universe. According to this view:
❖ Everything in the universe follows predefined natural laws,
❖ Therefore, there’s no need to assume a “God” behind these processes.
But to evaluate this claim, we must ask two fundamental questions:
✿ ① Can Natural Laws Create Systems on Their Own?
Natural laws may describe patterns, but can they generate information or create life?
Nancy Pearcey, in her book Total Truth, refutes this assumption by explaining:
❝ Natural laws don’t create information; they only describe repetitive events, like a pencil falling or salt dissolving in water. ❞
✔ Natural laws can generate limited, repetitive sequences (e.g., ABC ABC ABC),
✘ But life systems require complex and unique information (e.g., “In 1492, Columbus set sail…”).
Such non-repetitive, meaningful data cannot emerge from mere physical laws—they point to conscious intent.
✿ ② Can Consciousness Be Bypassed?
🔹 Henry Quastler, an expert in information theory, stated:
❝ The creation of new information is invariably linked to intelligent activity. ❞
🔹 Even NASA’s SETI program (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) interprets structured radio patterns as signs of intelligence, not chance.
🔹 Hubert Yockey, in Information Theory, Evolution, and the Origin of Life, mathematically argues that:
❝ Natural laws are like the rules of football—they ensure compliance but don’t determine outcomes. ❞
🔹 Gregory Chaitin observed that the informational capacity of physical laws is too limited to account for the origin of life.
✿ Paul Davies: The Test Tube Analogy
Physicist Paul Davies, writing in The Guardian (“How We Could Create Life”), explains:
❝ Mixing chemicals in a test tube to create life is like assembling switches and wires to build Microsoft Windows—it’s a category mistake. ❞
This analogy emphasizes the need for intelligence, not just processes.
✿ Are Natural Laws a Replacement for Religion?
📌 Natural laws are not explanations, they are descriptions.
✔ Example: Science explains how rain forms (evaporation, condensation, precipitation),
✘ But it cannot answer why the system is so perfectly balanced, or why it exists at all.
As a Christian scholar once wrote:
❝ Nature is the fact, not the explanation. ❞
Thus, nature is a phenomenon, not its own philosophy.
✿ The Limits of Scientific Knowledge
Science tells us what is happening, but not why it’s happening.
✔ A doctor may say blood is red due to hemoglobin.
✘ But why hemoglobin exists and how it functions so precisely is a question beyond empirical science.
✿ The Designer Analogy
Understanding a machine does not negate the existence of a designer.
Even if we can describe every part and function, the machine’s origin and purpose still imply a maker.
✿ A Critical Insight
A.L. Lunn, in Revolt Against Reason, critiques Darwinism:
❝ Natural selection may explain the survival of the fittest, but cannot explain the arrival of the fittest. ❞
Thus, evolution explains how organisms survive, but not how they originated.
✿ Conclusion
✔ Science has undoubtedly enhanced our understanding of the universe.
✘ But it has only described how things work, not why they exist.
Natural laws alone cannot explain creation.
Their presence points to a higher intelligence, not randomness.
🔹 Religion steps in where science is silent—offering answers to the deepest questions of origin, purpose, and meaning.
(Surah Fussilat: 53)
“We shall show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that this [Qur’an] is the Truth.”
