❀ Question:
When a person gives zakat to someone in need, is it obligatory to inform the recipient that the money being given is zakat?
❀ Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd:
✅ Case 1: When the Recipient May Refuse Zakat
➊ If the recipient is known to reject zakat or does not wish to accept zakat money, then:
✔ It is obligatory to inform him that the amount being given is zakat.
✔ This enables him to make a clear and informed decision — whether to accept or decline based on his conscience and principles.
✅ Case 2: When the Recipient Accepts Zakat
➋ If the recipient regularly accepts zakat, then:
✔ It is better not to inform him that the money is zakat.
✔ This approach reflects a spirit of kindness and dignity, helping to avoid any discomfort or embarrassment.
❖ Supporting Evidence:
Allah ﷻ says:
﴿يـأَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنوا لا تُبطِلوا صَدَقـتِكُم بِالمَنِّ وَالأَذى﴾
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 264)
“O you who believe! Do not render your charities worthless by reminders of generosity or by hurtful words.”
This verse encourages discretion, kindness, and respect in charitable giving.
❖ Conclusion:
✔ Telling the recipient is only obligatory when he might refuse zakat if unaware.
✔ Otherwise, it is better to keep it discreet, maintaining the recipient’s honor and the reward of the giver.
