🕌 Mosque Construction vs. Helping the Poor: 2 Shar’i Guidelines for Balance 🧕🍞
❓ Question:
Is it correct to say: “Only contribute a cement bag for the mosque when no one in your neighborhood deserves a bag of flour”?
✅ Answer by:
Shaykh Saeed Mujtaba Saeedi (ḥafiẓahullāh)
Research Scholar Wajid Iqbal (ḥafiẓahullāh)
✿ Shar’i Perspective on the Statement:
Such a statement cannot be accepted in an absolute sense, as each situation and need carries a different nature and urgency.
Shariah has instructed us to address each need distinctly and to maintain a proper balance between various obligations.
⚖️ When Two Needs Arise:
If one is faced with two competing priorities:
① A mosque is under construction
② A person is in urgent need of food
Then in such a case, providing food to the needy individual takes precedence, as preserving human life and fulfilling its essential needs is given priority in Islamic teachings.
“This statement is not acceptable in all circumstances. However, if one faces the choice between helping the hungry and contributing to a mosque under construction, then surely the poor person is more deserving of immediate help.”
📌 All Needs Hold Importance:
Islam does not emphasize one single need at the expense of all others. Rather, it teaches a balanced and inclusive approach:
✔ Mosque construction is crucial—it forms the foundation of Islamic society.
✔ Helping the poor is also an essential religious duty—a manifestation of compassion and social justice.
🛑 It is incorrect to say:
“As long as poverty exists, mosque construction should be halted.”
This type of generalization contradicts the comprehensive approach of Shariah.
📜 Summary of Key Guidelines:
◈ Urgent aid to the poor may sometimes carry greater importance.
◈ Constructing mosques remains a foundational act of communal benefit—it cannot be dismissed.
◈ Balance and situational priority must be applied in light of circumstances.
🌿 Shar’i Principle:
The temperament of Shariah is not to give permanent precedence to one need over another, but rather to evaluate:
➤ Time,
➤ Context, and
➤ Severity of the necessity
—before making a decision.
