Review of Content, Principles, and Analytical Approach in Sīrah Writing
— A Contemporary Framework for Writing the Biography of the Prophet ﷺ —

❖ Identifying Source Material: The First Step in Sīrah Writing

The first stage in Sīrah research involves identifying, determining, and organizing material.
Traditionally, writers of Sīrah have sourced their material from books of Sīrah, while modern Ahl al-Hadith scholars emphasize reliance primarily on Hadith compilations.

However, both classical and contemporary Sīrah scholars have not restricted themselves to Hadith literature alone; they have also drawn from established Sīrah narrators.
Even Imam al-Bukhārī, the great Hadith compiler, included reports from notable Sīrah authorities such as:

✔ ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr
✔ Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī
✔ Ibn Isḥāq
✔ Mūsā ibn ‘Uqbah

❖ Principle of Giving Preference to Hadith over Sīrah Narrations

Both classical and modern scholars have adopted the principle that in case of contradiction, precedence must be given to authentic Hadith reports over general Sīrah narrations.

📘 Mawlānā Shiblī Nu‘mānī and Sayyid Sulaymān Nadwī clearly articulated this rule in Muqaddimah Sīrat al-Nabī.
📘 Imām Mughaltā’ī supported this view, stating that consensus among Sīrah scholars cannot override solitary authentic Hadith.
📘 Ibn Ḥajar al-‘Asqalānī and other scholars have silently acknowledged this rule in practice.

❖ Difference Between the Methods of Hadith Scholars and Sīrah Writers

The primary focus of Hadith scholars was the compilation and legal extraction of Hadith for the purpose of jurisprudence — not to present a cohesive historical narrative of the Prophet’s life.

Therefore, in their works:

✔ Sīrah-related material appears under jurisprudential headings.
✔ A chronological narrative is often missing.

In contrast, Sīrah writers aimed to:

✔ Compile all aspects of the Prophet’s life
✔ Present them in historical sequence
✔ Arrange content topically and thematically to form a comprehensive narrative

❖ Guidelines for the Sīrah Writer

A serious Sīrah writer must:

  1. Benefit from diverse disciplines:
Include content not just from Hadith and Sīrah books, but also from the Qur’an, Tafsir, Fiqh, linguistics, literature, and history.
  2. Resolve conflicting reports:
Employ principles of reconciliation (taṭbīq) and synthesis (talfīq) where possible.
If reconciliation is not possible, preference should be given to the collective judgment of Sīrah scholars.

❖ Types of Sīrah Literature

Sīrah works are generally categorized into three levels:

Level Target Audience Example
Concise General readers & beginners Introductory texts
Intermediate Secondary-level students Standard textbooks
Comprehensive Scholars, researchers, intellectuals Analytical works

📘 Qāḍī Sulaymān Manṣūrpūrī set an example by designing Sīrah books for all levels, effectively addressing a wide readership.

❖ Modern Approach: Analytical and Critical Study of Sīrah

Sīrah writing must now move beyond mere storytelling and focus on analysis and interpretation.

This analytical approach:

✔ Deepens the reader’s understanding
✔ Serves as a powerful tool in defending the Prophet ﷺ
✔ Enhances the relevance of Sīrah in modern intellectual discourse

❖ Textual and Contextual Critique of Narrations

Every narration must be examined with the following questions:

✔ Does it align with the character of the Prophet ﷺ?
✔ Does it conform to Islamic ethical values?
✔ Are pre-prophethood events consistent with those that occurred after Prophethood?

❖ Objectivity in Historical Writing

📘 Ibn Khaldūn warns that bias distorts history.
Sīrah writers must rise above personal prejudices and write with intellectual honesty.

Example:

Early Sīrah writers like Ibn Isḥāq and Ibn Hishām overlooked Zubayr ibn ‘Abd al-Muṭṭalib, whereas later scholars corrected this omission with a more balanced portrayal.

❖ Conclusion: The Need of Contemporary Sīrah Writing

Modern Sīrah scholarship must:

✔ Go beyond surface-level events
✔ Examine the causes, background, and socio-political context
✔ Follow the method of Ibn Khaldūn, who emphasized both the outer and inner dimensions of historical analysis

Only through such critical and analytical methodology can the life of the Prophet ﷺ be presented in its full reality and relevance.
