❖ Analysis of Humanism and the Modernization of Religions ❖
◈ Harmony with the Modernization of Religions
In contemporary times, every religion is striving to secure its place before humanism. Aspects of religion that do not conform to modern human principles are either concealed or reinterpreted to make them acceptable. Religions have begun to sideline those of their teachings that are considered incompatible with modern intellectual or moral standards.
◈ Religions’ Past and the Rise of “Man”
In earlier times, religions controlled individuals through fear of Paradise and Hell. However, once man recognized his authority, status, and intellect, he began reshaping religions—or adapting them according to his own principles.
Now, religions are being compelled to undergo “reformation” in alignment with human standards.
◈ The Movement for Religious Reformation
This “religious reform” is a concept presented by the Western world, born as a result of humanism.
It altered the autonomy and supernatural standing of religions, subjecting them to the authority of man. Religious traditions reached a point where man became the center, and even spiritual matters became conditional upon human understanding.
◈ Philosophy of Humanism: Centering Man Instead of God
At its core, humanism is a philosophy that places man—not God or deities—at the center.
According to this philosophy:
① Human Affairs: Man should determine the affairs of his life himself.
② Moral Judgment: There is no need for a supernatural power to distinguish between good and evil.
③ Freedom: Man cannot be bound by divine principles.
④ Universal Ethics: Principles of right and wrong must be universally acceptable and undisputed among all human beings.
◈ Branches of Modern Humanist Thought
Humanism gave rise to several ideologies, such as:
✔ Democracy
✔ Capitalism
✔ Secularism
✔ Nationalism
✔ Liberalism
✔ Communism
All these ideologies are founded on the principle of human liberty, although their interpretations may vary or even contradict one another.
◈ The Divide Between Religions and Humanism
Humanism has become a religion in itself, placing man at the center instead of God, in contrast to traditional religions.
Although differences among religions are not a new phenomenon, humanism introduces a discourse that emphasizes excluding God from worldly matters.
◈ Intellectual Objection
Followers of humanism argue: If God truly wished to communicate with man, He should have done so through a single, clear, and indisputable way, not through various conflicting religions.
To them, the existence of religious disagreements becomes evidence against the existence of God.
◈ The Arrogance of Modern Man
Modern man claims he can live peacefully without God.
Yet historical facts reveal that the greatest bloodshed in the last two centuries—including both World Wars and the Cold War—was perpetrated by those who followed humanist ideologies.
◈ Conclusion
Humanism is a philosophy that grants man the liberty to live by his own intellect and authority. However, this philosophy also brings with it numerous challenges and contradictions.
The ongoing conflict between religions and humanism leaves humanity with a profound intellectual question:
❖ Can man truly establish a better society without God?
