Guidance on the Minimum Age of Sacrificial Animals in Light of Qur’an and Hadith
Compiled by: Tawheed.com
Introduction
To understand the correct rulings of Qurbani (sacrifice), it is essential to determine the minimum age of the sacrificial animal. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ clearly instructed that, in general, a Musinnah (Thaniyah) animal should be slaughtered, except in the case of sheep (ḍa’n), for which a Jadha‘ is also permissible. Below is a linguistic and juristic explanation of Jadha‘ and Musinnah, along with evidence regarding the minimum age for various animals (camel, cow, goat, sheep).
The Main Hadith
قال رسول اللہ ﷺ: لا تذبحوا إلا مسنةً إلا أن یعسر علیکم فتذبحوا جذعةً من الضأن
(Sahih Muslim)
Translation: Sacrifice only a Musinnah, but if it is difficult for you, then sacrifice a Jadha‘ from among sheep.
This Hadith shows that the principal ruling is to sacrifice a Musinnah animal, with a specific allowance for a sheep’s Jadha‘.
① Jadha‘ of Sheep (Ḍa’n) – Age Requirement
View of the Majority (Jumhoor) of Scholars and Lexicographers
According to the majority, a Jadha‘ of sheep is one that has completed one full year.
- Fath al-Bari: “فمن الضأن ما أكمل السنة وهو قول الجمهور” (Vol. 23, p. 329)
- Sharh Muslim (al-Nawawi, Vol. 2, p. 155)
- Nayl al-Awtar: “الجزع من الضأن ما له سنة تامة… هذا هو الأشهر” (Vol. 5, p. 202)
- Tuhfat al-Ahwazi, Majma‘ al-Bihar, Badh al-Majhud: all concur that it is one year.
Hanafi and Hanbali Position
Some Hanafis and Hanbalis say that a Jadha‘ of sheep can be 6 months old. However, since this contradicts the view of the majority of linguists, the stronger opinion is that it must be at least one full year old.
② Jadha‘ of Goat (Ma‘z) – Age & Ruling
Hadith of Abu Burdah ibn Niyar (RA)
When he sacrificed before Eid Salah, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“شاتُك شاةُ لحم“ (Bukhari) – “Your sheep is only meat,” meaning it did not count as Qurbani.
When Abu Burdah (RA) offered a Jadha‘ of goat, the Prophet ﷺ allowed it only for him, saying:
“اذبحها ولا تصلح لغیرك“ (Bukhari, Muslim).
Scholars’ Explanation
This proves that a Jadha‘ of goat is not valid for others.
Linguistic Definition
- Fath al-Bari: “It is one that has entered its second year.”
- Tuhfat al-Ahwazi: “For goat and cow, Jadha‘ means having completed one year and entered the second.”
Conclusion: Goat Jadha‘ is at least one year old, but it is not valid for Qurbani except for special cases like that of Abu Burdah (RA) and ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir (RA).
③ Jadha‘ of Cow (Baqr)
- One that has completed one year and entered the second.
- However, based on Hadith, only a Musinnah (Thaniyah) cow is acceptable for Qurbani.
④ Jadha‘ of Camel (Ibil)
- One that has completed four years and entered the fifth.
- Yet, only a Musinnah camel is valid for Qurbani.
⑤ Definition of Musinnah (Thaniyah)
From the Hadith: “لا تذبحوا إلا مسنة…” (Sahih Muslim)
- Musinnah = Thaniyah = An animal whose front milk teeth have fallen and new teeth have emerged.
Ages for Thaniyah:
- Camel: 5 years complete, entering 6th year.
- Cow: 2 years complete, entering 3rd year.
- Goat: 2 years complete, entering 3rd year.
- Sheep: 2 years complete (though 1-year Jadha‘ is permitted).
⑥ Practice of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (RA)
He always sacrificed Thaniyah animals, even sheep, despite the allowance for a 1-year sheep. (Musaffa, Vol. 1, p. 181)
⑦ Summary of the Discussion
✔ General rule: Sacrifice a Musinnah animal.
✔ Camel: 5 years+
✔ Cow: 2 years+
✔ Goat: 2 years+
✔ Sheep: Either 2 years+ or 1-year Jadha‘ (valid by Hadith).
✔ Only two Sahabah (Abu Burdah RA, ‘Uqbah RA) had special permission to offer a 1-year goat.
✔ Tooth replacement is also an identifying sign of Thaniyah.
