❖ The Final Time and Virtue of ʿIshāʾ Prayer ❖
Adapted from: “Ahkām wa Masāʾil fī Ḍawʾ al-Qurʾān wa al-Ḥadīth”, Volume 2

◈ Question:

Until what time can the ʿIshāʾ prayer be performed? Is there greater reward in delaying it to the later part of the night, especially when congregational prayer is held at its earliest time?

❖ Ruling and Explanation

➊ Final Time for ʿIshāʾ Prayer:

According to authentic Hadiths, the permissible time for ʿIshāʾ extends until the middle of the night (niṣf al-layl). Some narrations also suggest that praying it up to the first third of the night (thuluth al-layl) is more virtuous if it does not cause hardship for worshippers.

➋ Virtue of Delaying the Prayer:

If congregational prayer is arranged at the earliest time, it should not be delayed—praying in congregation at the beginning of time is superior.

However, if delaying the prayer causes no inconvenience, then praying after some delay (up to a third of the night) can be considered more virtuous, as practiced in some cases by the Prophet ﷺ.

✔ ʿIshāʾ prayer is valid until the middle of the night.
✔ Praying up to the first third of the night is more rewarding if it does not burden others.
✔ Congregational prayer at the earliest time remains most virtuous.
