❖ Question:

What is the weight of Mudd, Wasq, Dirham, and Dīnār in modern (English/metric) measurements?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd…

✿ Weight of Mudd:

◄ The word “Mudd” means a measure (a standard unit for volume/weight).
◄ For a considerable time, research was ongoing regarding the precise weight capacity of “Mudd Madani”.
◄ By the grace of Allah, Brother Badiʿ al-Dīn Shāh رحمه الله traveled to the Ḥaramayn Sharīfayn for a year.
◄ There, he obtained a Mudd measuring vessel from Maulvi ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq Bahāwalpurī (Shaykh al-Ḥaram in Makkah al-Mukarramah).
◄ This vessel was crafted based on comparison with the Mudd measurement from the time of the Prophet ﷺ.
◄ Its authentication (sanad) was also received from the aforementioned scholar, tracing back to Sayyidunā Zayd ibn Thābit رضي الله عنه.
◄ Based on this, Brother Badiʿ al-Dīn had another measuring vessel made as a replica.
◄ Later, I obtained this vessel from him and crafted an exact copy of it, receiving its sanad from him as well.
◄ Fa’l-ḥamdu lillāh ʿalā dhālik!

✿ Weight of Mudd Based on Different Items:

◈ Water: One Mudd contains 66 tola (traditional unit).
◈ Wheat: One Mudd contains 55 tola, which equals half a kilo plus 15 tola more.
◈ 1 Sāʿ = 4 Mudds
◈ Therefore, the weight of 1 Sāʿ of wheat is approximately 2.75 kilograms.
◈ This is the same amount of wheat we give as Fiṭrah.

✿ Dirham:

◈ The weight of 1 Dirham is 3 māsha (another traditional subunit of tola).

✿ Dīnār (or Mithqāl):

◈ Dīnār and Mithqāl are the same.
◈ 1 Mithqāl = 4.5 māsha
◈ Accordingly, the Nisāb of gold is 20 Mithqāl.
◈ 1 Mithqāl = 0.75 tola
◈ Hence, if a person possesses 7.5 tola or more of gold, Zakat becomes obligatory.

✿ Wasq:

◈ 1 Wasq = 60 Sāʿ
◈ The weight of 1 Sāʿ (Madani) based on wheat is approximately 2.75 kg (as previously stated).
◈ Therefore, 60 Sāʿ = 165 kilograms.
◈ In local measurement units: 4 man and 5 kilograms (1 man ≈ 40 kg).

❖ Additional Clarification:

◄ All these weights are based on wheat measurements.
◄ However, the measurement differs with other grains:
✿ For instance, millet (bājra) fills more in one Mudd than wheat does.
◄ Therefore, to determine the correct weight for each grain, it must be placed in a Mudd vessel and then weighed.
