❀ Question
Is the single Iqamah preferable or the double? Please answer with authentic Hadith.
❀ Answer
الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!
Although the double Iqamah is permissible and there is absolutely no doubt about its validity, the more authentic and preferable practice is the single Iqamah (Akhari). This is supported by authentic Ahadith and the practice of the majority of scholars.
✿ Evidences from Ahadith
Hadith of Hazrat Anas (RA):
((فَأمِرَ بِلَالٌ أَنْ یُّشْفِعة الاذانَ وَأَن یُّوْتِرَ الاقامة))
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
“Bilal (RA) was commanded that he should recite the words of the Adhan twice, and the words of the Iqamah once—except for Qad Qamatis Salah, which should be said twice.”
Another narration from Hazrat Anas (RA):
((عن انس أن رسول اللہﷺ أمر بلالا ان یشفع الاذان ویوتر الاقامة))
(Narrated by al-Bayhaqi with authentic chain, Nayl al-Awtar: Vol. 2, p. 40)
“Hazrat Anas (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded Bilal (RA) to recite the words of the Adhan twice and the words of the Iqamah once.”
✔ Conclusion from both authentic Ahadith:
① The Adhan is recited in pairs (two by two).
② The Iqamah is recited singly (once for each phrase, except Qad Qamatis Salah).
③ Hence, the Iqamah consists of 11 phrases in total.

✿ Opinions of Scholars
Imam Sulaiman al-Khattabi (رحمه الله):
((وَاَلَّذِي جَرَى بِهِ الْعَمَلُ فِي الْحَرَمَيْنِ… أَنَّ الْإِقَامَةَ فُرَادَى))
(Nayl al-Awtar, Vol. 2, p. 41)
“The consensus of the majority of scholars is that the Iqamah should be recited singly. This has been the practice in the Haramain, Hijaz, Sham, Yemen, Egypt, Maghrib, and throughout the farthest regions of the Islamic world.”
Ibn Sayyid al-Nas (رحمه الله):
((قَالَ ابْنُ سَيِّدِ النَّاسِ… عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ وَابْنُهُ وَأَنَسٌ وَالْحَسَنُ الْبَصْرِيُّ…))
(Nayl al-Awtar, Vol. 2, p. 40)
“Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), his son Abdullah ibn Umar (RA), Anas (RA), Hasan al-Basri, al-Zuhri, al-Awza‘i, Imam Ahmad, Imam Ishaq, Abu Thawr, Yahya ibn Yahya, Dawud, Ibn al-Mundhir, and many others all held the opinion that the Iqamah should be single. Most scholars of Islam have also adopted this view.”
