excerpt from the book “Namaz-e-Janazah mein Surah al-Fatiha: Farz, Mustahabb, ya Makruh Tahreemi?” by Dr. Hafiz Abu Yahya Noorpuri:

❖ Reciting Surah al-Fātiḥah is Essential for the Acceptance of Every Prayer

Numerous clear ḥadīths of the Prophet ﷺ explicitly state that the recitation of Surah al-Fātiḥah is a condition for the validity and acceptance of every Ṣalāh (prayer). Below are a few selected narrations:

① Ḥadīth of ʿUbādah bin aṣ-Ṣāmit رضي الله عنه

Sayyidunā ʿUbādah bin aṣ-Ṣāmit رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ»

“There is no prayer for the one who does not recite Surah al-Fātiḥah.”
📚 [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 756, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 394]

This noble prophetic statement clearly affirms that no prayer is accepted without the recitation of Surah al-Fātiḥah. The words “لِمَنْ” (for the one) and “صَلَاةَ” (prayer) are general, meaning: whoever the person may be, and whichever prayer he is performing — without Surah al-Fātiḥah, it shall not be accepted. The Prophet ﷺ did not exempt any person or any specific prayer from this general ruling. Hence, restricting this ruling for certain individuals (e.g. followers in prayer) or certain types of prayer (e.g. Janazah) is not permissible.

❖ Janazah Is Also a Form of Ṣalāh

It is undeniable that Janazah is a prayer (Ṣalāh). No Muslim disputes this fact. And who can deny the Qur’an?

Allah the Most High says:

﴿وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَىٰ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُم مَّاتَ أَبَدًا وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَىٰ قَبْرِهِ﴾

“(O Prophet!) Never offer prayer for any one of them (the hypocrites) who dies, nor stand by his grave.”
📖 [at-Tawbah: 84]

In books of ḥadīth and fiqh, the term “Ṣalāh al-Janāzah” (funeral prayer) is consistently used — as any beginner student of Islamic sciences is aware. Refer to any major ḥadīth work with legal classifications.

Also, consider these books of Ḥanafī fiqh:

  • al-Ashbāh wa an-Naẓā’ir
  • al-Mabsūṭ by as-Sarakhsī
  • al-Hidāyah by al-Marghīnānī
  • al-Baḥr ar-Rā’iq
  • Badā’iʿ aṣ-Ṣanā’iʿ
  • Fatḥ al-Qadīr
  • Marāqī al-Falāḥ
  • Fatāwā al-Hindiyyah (Fatāwā ʿĀlamgīrī)

These confirm that Janazah is a prayer, and according to Fatāwā al-Hindiyyah:

“In Ṣalāh al-Janāzah, one must intend Ṣalāh for Allah and duʿā for the deceased.”
📚 [Fatāwā al-Hindiyyah: 1/66]

Hence, if Janazah is Ṣalāh, then by the declaration of the Prophet ﷺ, recitation of Surah al-Fātiḥah is a condition for its acceptance.

❖ The Jurists and the Ḥadīth of ʿUbādah bin aṣ-Ṣāmit

Let us see how the major jurists treated this ḥadīth:

✔ Imām al-Bukhārī (256 AH), known for his insight in fiqh, titled the chapter before narrating this ḥadīth:

“Chapter: The obligation of recitation upon the imām and follower in all prayers — whether during residence or travel, and whether audible or silent.”
📚 [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, before ḥadīth 756]

✔ Imām at-Tirmidhī (279 AH) stated:

“The ḥadīth of ʿUbādah is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ. Most of the scholars among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, such as ʿUmar bin al-Khaṭṭāb, ʿAlī, Jābir bin ʿAbdullah, ʿImrān bin Ḥuṣayn, and others, acted upon it. They all said: ‘No Ṣalāh is valid without the recitation of Surah al-Fātiḥah.’ Likewise, this is the opinion of Imām Ibn al-Mubārak, Imām ash-Shāfiʿī, Imām Aḥmad, and Imām Isḥāq.”
📚 [Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī, under ḥadīth 247]

✔ Imām Ibn Ḥazm (456 AH) wrote:

“As for the recitation of Surah al-Fātiḥah — the Prophet ﷺ named Janazah a prayer when he said: ‘Offer prayer over your companion,’ and he also said: ‘There is no Ṣalāh for one who does not recite Fātiḥat al-Kitāb.’”
📚 [al-Muḥallā bi’l-Āthār: 5/129]

✔ Imām Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr (463 AH):

“Imām Dāwūd ad-Ẓāhirī used this very ḥadīth as evidence that reciting Surah al-Fātiḥah in Janazah is obligatory, because Janazah is Ṣalāh, and like other prayers, cannot be offered without facing the Qiblah or being in the state of wudu.”
📚 [al-Istidhkār: 3/42]

✔ Imām al-Bayhaqī (458 AH):

“This ḥadīth is general (‘ʿĀmm’),” i.e. applicable to all prayers.
📚 [al-Khilāfiyyāt: 4/239]

✔ Imām aṣ-Ṣanʿānī (1182 AH) stated in Subul as-Salām:

“It is agreed upon that Janazah is Ṣalāh, and the ḥadīth ‘No Ṣalāh without Fātiḥah’ applies to it. To exclude it from this general ruling requires a clear textual proof.”
📚 [Subul as-Salām: 1/487]

Thus, this is not a new claim; prominent jurists have affirmed that this ḥadīth includes Ṣalāh al-Janāzah, making Surah al-Fātiḥah obligatory in it.

❖ Additional Ḥadīths Supporting This Position

② Ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه

«من صلى صلاة لم يقرأ فيها بأم القرآن؛ فهي خداج»
“Whoever offers a prayer in which he does not recite Surah al-Fātiḥah — it is deficient (incomplete and invalid).”
📚 [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 395]

If Janazah is Ṣalāh, then a Janazah without Surah al-Fātiḥah is also invalid.

③ Ḥadīth of ʿAbdullāh bin ʿAmr رضي الله عنه

«كل صلاة لا يقرأ فيها بفاتحة الكتاب؛ فهي خداج»
“Every Ṣalāh in which Surah al-Fātiḥah is not recited is deficient (invalid).”
📚 [Sunan Ibn Mājah: 841; Qirā’ah Khalfa al-Imām by al-Bukhārī: 15 — Authentic isnād]

The word “every” includes Janazah.

④ Ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه

«لا صلاة إلا بقراءة»
“There is no prayer without recitation.”
📚 [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 396]

When asked if just Surah al-Fātiḥah is enough, he replied: “That suffices, though more is better.” Again, every prayer includes Janazah, and without scriptural proof, Janazah cannot be excluded from this general command.

✅ Conclusion

✔ Janazah is a prayer by unanimous agreement.
✔ The Prophet ﷺ declared no Ṣalāh is valid without Surah al-Fātiḥah.
✔ Major jurists and hadith scholars applied this ruling to Janazah as well.
✔ There is no authentic report prohibiting the recitation of Surah al-Fātiḥah in Ṣalāh al-Janāzah.
✔ Hence, reciting Surah al-Fātiḥah is essential in Janazah prayer based on sound evidence from Qur’an, Sunnah, and scholarly consensus.
