❖ Question:
Is one cloth sufficient for the Kafan (shroud), or should three garments be used when shrouding the deceased?
❖ Answer Based on Qur’an, Hadith, and Scholarly Views:
Islamic teachings emphasize that a deceased should be shrouded in a clean, decent garment that covers the entire body. The minimum requirement is that the shroud must sufficiently cover the body. However, using three garments is considered preferable and from the Sunnah.
✅ One Cloth is Permissible:
Numerous authentic examples from the time of the Prophet ﷺ show that a single cloth sufficed in circumstances of necessity, especially during battles:
✔ Mus’ab bin Umair رضي الله عنه was shrouded in a single sheet after being martyred at Uhud.
— [Tirmidhi 3853, Abu Dawud 3155, Nasai 4/38, Musnad Ahmad 5/109]
✔ Hamza رضي الله عنه, the chief of martyrs, was also shrouded in one cloth.
— [Musnad Ahmad 6/395]
✔ The Prophet ﷺ gave his own cloak as a shroud for a martyred companion.
— [Abdul Razzaq 9597, Mustadrak Hakim 3/595]
These examples confirm that in necessity, a single cloth is sufficient for kafan.
✅ Three Clothes are Sunnah (Preferred):
For a normal burial, using three white shrouds is Sunnah as practiced during the burial of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
❝The Prophet ﷺ was shrouded in three white Yemeni cloths, without a shirt or turban.❞
— [Bukhari 1271, Abu Dawud 3151, Tirmidhi 996, Ibn Majah 1469]
Imam al-Tirmidhi and other scholars classify this as mustahabb (recommended), not wajib (obligatory).
❖ Key Guidelines:
① The shroud must cover the entire body.
② It should be clean, decent, and not extravagant.
③ If resources allow, three garments are best.
④ If only one is available, it is sufficient, especially in hardship.
✿ Women’s Kafan:
Some narrations suggest five pieces for women, but there is no authentic Hadith confirming this. Hence, the same standard applies to both men and women unless specific evidence exists.
❖ Conclusion:
✔ One cloth is permissible and valid, particularly in times of need or scarcity.
✔ Three shrouds are Sunnah and preferred based on the Prophet’s ﷺ burial.
✔ Extravagance in kafan is discouraged as it contradicts the example of the Prophet ﷺ and wastes wealth.
May Allah grant us the ability to follow the Sunnah in all aspects of life and death.
