What Is the Ruling on Trimming the Nails of a Deceased Person?

Source: Fatāwā Amunpūrī by Shaykh Ghulām Mustafa Zaheer Amunpūrī

❖ Question:

What is the Islamic ruling on trimming the nails of a deceased (mayyit)?

✿ Answer:

If a person, due to a valid Sharʿī excuse or out of laziness, was unable to trim their nails during life and then passed away — it is not permissible for the living to trim the deceased’s nails.

This action has no authentic Sharʿī evidence, and:

  • It provides no benefit to the deceased, and
  • It may cause harm or discomfort to the living.

❀ Statements from the Early Scholars:

✅ Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn رحمه الله stated:

“He disliked trimming the pubic hair or nails of the deceased.”
📚 (Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah: 3/245 – Chain is authentic)

There exists a narration wherein Sayyidunā Saʿd رضي الله عنه gave ghusl to a deceased and asked for a razor:

📚 (Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah: 3/246)
However, this narration is mursal (disconnected) and thus weak, and cannot be used as valid evidence.

✅ Imām al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī رحمه الله said:

“The nails of the deceased should be trimmed.”
📚 (Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah: 3/246)

But this opinion was rejected by other scholars.

✅ Shuʿbah ibn Ḥajjāj رحمه الله said:

“I mentioned this to Ḥammād, and he rejected it and said:
‘Tell me, if the deceased was uncircumcised, should he be circumcised after death?’”

📚 (Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah: 3/246 – Chain is authentic)

This analogy shows that trimming nails and similar acts pertain to the living, not the dead.

❀ Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal رحمه الله was asked about this issue:

He replied:

“Some people say the nails should be cut, and others say:
‘If he was uncircumcised, should we now circumcise him?’ — meaning: it should not be done.”

📚 (Masāʾil al-Imām Aḥmad by Abū Dāwūd: 3/246)

✅ Conclusion:

✔ Trimming the nails of a deceased person is not legislated in the Sharīʿah.
✔ There is no reward or consequence related to the post-death grooming.
✔ If the person was negligent in life, they bear the burden.
✔ If it was due to a valid excuse, they are excused by Allah ﷻ.
✔ Post-death cleanliness routines are not mandated beyond the prescribed ghusl.

🚫 Therefore, cutting the nails of a deceased is not allowed, as it:

  • Has no Sharʿī basis
  • Is beneficial neither to the deceased nor the living
