Giving adhān (call to prayer) at the grave after burial is a bidʿah (innovation).
There is no basis for this practice in the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
❖ Points of Clarification:
✅ 1. No Proof in the Sunnah
There is no authentic hadith that establishes this practice.
If it were a virtuous act or beneficial for the deceased, the Sahabah — who best understood and practiced Islam — would have done it.
But no Companion, no Tābiʿī, and none of the righteous Salaf ever did so.
✅ 2. Not Found in the Practice of Imams
This act is also:
- Not reported from any of the four Imams (Abu Ḥanīfah, Mālik, al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad)
- Not mentioned in the major Ḥanafī legal texts (Ummahāt al-Kutub)
📌 It has no precedent in early Islamic scholarship.

“Giving the common adhān at the time of placing the deceased in the grave is not from the Sunnah.
Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar al-Makkī explicitly stated that it is a bidʿah, and those who thought it should be done — by analogy to giving adhān in a newborn’s ear — in order to resemble the beginning and end of life, have gone astray from correct understanding.”
