◈ The Rise of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani and the Scholars’ Response
Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani initially gained fame as a skilled debater, which led many to hold a favorable opinion of him. However, as his writings gradually began to reveal his self-perception as a mujtahid (jurist), promised Messiah, and eventually a claimant of prophethood, the scholars of Islam became vigilant.
Due to the slow dissemination of printed material at the time, many notable personalities took time to fully grasp the reality of Qadianism.
◈ Allama Iqbal’s Turning Point
In the beginning, Allama Iqbal’s view of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani was somewhat neutral. He assumed that the divergence was perhaps limited to jurisprudential differences. However, once the reality unfolded before him, Iqbal, a true lover of the Prophet ﷺ, could no longer tolerate the claim of false prophethood.
He unequivocally declared Qadianism as falsehood and labeled Mirza Qadiani a false prophet and a traitor to both Islam and India.
◈ Iqbal’s Dialogue with Pandit Nehru
Upon this stance, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru wrote a letter to Iqbal, questioning how an intellectual like him could hold such a harsh view of the Qadianis. Iqbal responded with three clear points:
➊ The Unmatched Status of Prophethood ﷺ
Iqbal stated that the Hindu nation cannot understand the lofty status of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and therefore, they fail to grasp the gravity of the belief in finality of prophethood (Khatm-e-Nubuwwah).
➋ Faith in the Finality of Prophethood
He clarified that belief in the finality of Prophethood is central to Islam. Whoever denies it, is no longer considered part of the faith.
➌ A Foresight for the Future
Iqbal warned Nehru that Qadianism may seem insignificant now, but in the future it could emerge as a significant threat. If the Qadianis are not separated from mainstream Muslims, many people around the world may unknowingly fall into their deception, especially in Africa, and die upon misguidance.
◈ A Parallel: Nation of Islam in the U.S.
Iqbal’s warning finds a real-life parallel in the American organization “Nation of Islam”. Initially, figures like Muhammad Ali accepted Islam through the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, who presented himself as a prophet.
Later, his son Warith Deen Muhammad, after performing Hajj, realized the truth and corrected his belief. Renowned personalities like Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali also reformed their beliefs and embraced true Islam.
◈ Qadianism in Africa — Eyewitness Account by Dr. Intizar Butt
Another testimony to Iqbal’s foresight is the field experience of Dr. Intizar Butt, a social worker and eye surgeon. During a charity eye camp in Burkina Faso, he visited a magnificent Islamic center offering Qur’anic education, social welfare, and religious training.
However, deeper inquiry revealed that it was a Qadiani-run center, where European Ahmadis were influencing local populations and converting them under the guise of Islam. Dr. Butt observed that many African converts unknowingly embraced Qadianism, mistaking it for true Islam.
◈ Iqbal’s Vision Realized and the Role of Pakistan’s Constitution
Iqbal’s foresight proved accurate, emphasizing the need to clearly separate Qadianis from the Muslim Ummah. Had the constitutional amendment in Pakistan not been passed, Qadianism could have deeply rooted itself within the nation.
Today, despite efforts by global powers, Qadianis cannot be accepted as Muslims, and Pakistan’s decisive constitutional stance plays a vital role in safeguarding the Ummah from this deviation.
◈ Final Thoughts
In a sacred month like Ramadan, rather than stirring controversies, media anchors and scholars should focus on spreading the true spirit of Islam. Such sensitive issues must not be raised irresponsibly. Instead, thorough research and consultation with qualified scholars is essential. Without this, such debates only inflame public sentiment and create discord within the nation.
