Hadith 77
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سُرَاقَةَ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، " أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَزْوَةِ بَنِي أَنْمَارٍ كَانَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ مُوَجَّهَةً بِهِ قِبَلَ الْمَشْرِقِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was performing prayer on his mount during the expedition of Banu Anmar, while his face was towards the east.
Hadith 78
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بِطَرِيقِ مَكَّةَ قَالَ سَعِيدٌ : فَلَمَّا خَشِيتُ الْفَجْرَ فَنَزَلْتُ فَأَوْتَرْتُ ، فَقَالَ : أَلَيْسَ لَكَ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُسْوَةٌ ؟ فَقُلْتُ : بَلَى وَاللَّهِ قَالَ : فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ " يُوتِرُ عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ " .
Sayyiduna Saeed bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that he was traveling to Makkah with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). When dawn was near, I dismounted from my ride and performed the Witr prayer. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "Is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not a model for you?" I replied, "Why not! By Allah." He then said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform Witr on the camel itself."
Hadith 79
وَأَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكٌ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ يَحْيَى الْمَازِنِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْحُبَابِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ , عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى حِمَارٍ وَهُوَ مُوَجَّهٌ إِلَى خَيْبَرَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performing prayer while traveling on a donkey, and he was going to Khaybar.
Hadith 80
وَأَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ فِي السَّفَرِ حَيْثُمَا تَوَجَّهَتْ بِهِ " . قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ : وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform (optional) prayers while traveling on his mount, facing in whichever direction the mount was headed. Abdullah bin Dinar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to do the same.
Hadith 81
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " صَلاةُ الْجَمَاعَةِ تَفْضُلُ عَلَى صَلاةِ الْفَذِّ بِسَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ دَرَجَةً " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Congregational prayer is twenty-seven degrees more virtuous than the prayer of a person alone."
Hadith 82
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " صَلاةُ الْجَمَاعَةِ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ صَلاةِ أَحَدِكُمْ وَحْدَهُ بِخَمْسَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ جُزْءًا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Congregational prayer is twenty-five degrees more virtuous than the prayer of any one of you performed alone."
Hadith 83
أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ ، سَمِعْتُ عِرَاكَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ، سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، يَقُولُ : " وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِخَيْبَرَ وَرَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي غَفَّارٍ يَؤُمُّ النَّاسَ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقْرَأُ فِي صَلاةِ الصُّبْحِ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الأُولَى بِسُورَةِ مَرْيَمَ ، وَفِي الثَّانِيَةِ : قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ بِ وَيْلٌ لِلْمُطَفِّفِينَ " . وَكَانَ عِنْدَنَا رَجُلٌ لَهُ مِكْيَالانِ يَأْخُذُ بِأَحَدِهِمَا وَيُعْطِي بِالآخَرِ ، فَقُلْتُ : وَيْلٌ لِفُلانٍ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to Madinah while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had gone to conquer Khaybar. A man from Banu Ghifar was leading the people in prayer. I heard him reciting Surah Maryam in the first rak‘ah and Surah Al-Mutaffifin in the second during the Fajr prayer. (Since in this Surah, those who cheat in weighing and measuring are condemned), there was a man from our area who had two scales: if he wanted to buy goods, he would weigh with one scale, and if he wanted to sell goods, he would weigh with the other scale. So I said: Destruction be for so-and-so.
Hadith 84
أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ عِلاقَةَ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ شُعْبَةَ ، يَقُولُ : قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى تَوَرَّمَتْ قَدَمَاهُ فَقِيلَ : أَلَيْسَ قَدْ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَكَ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِكَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ ؟ فَقَالَ : " أَفَلا أَكُونُ عَبْدًا شَكُورًا " .

أَخْبَرَنَا الطَّحَاوِي ، قَالَ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الْجِيزِيُّ قَالَ : سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ، قَالَ : أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ ، قَالَ : أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو صَخْرٍ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قُسَيْطٍ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَتْ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا صَلَّى قَامَ حَتَّى تَنْفَطِرَ رِجْلاهُ ، قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَتَصْنَعُ هَذَا وَقَدْ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَكَ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِكَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ ! قَالَ : " أَفَلا أَكُونُ عَبْدًا شَكُورًا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood (in prayer) for so long that his feet became swollen. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked, “Why do you need to stand for so long when Allah Almighty has already forgiven you?” He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: “Should I not be a grateful servant of Allah?”
Hadith 85
أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ عِلاقَةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَمِّي قُطْبَةَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ، يَقُولُ : " سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الْفَجْرِ وَالنَّخْلَ بَاسِقَاتٍ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qutbah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Noble Prophet ﷺ reciting ﴿وَالنَّخْلَ بَاسِقَاتٍ﴾ (i.e., Surah Qaf) in the Fajr prayer.
Hadith 86
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، وَسُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " قَرَأَ بِ الطُّورِ فِي الْمَغْرِبِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jubair bin Mut’im (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) reciting Surah At-Tur in the Maghrib prayer.
Hadith 87
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، وَسُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " قَرَأَ بِ الطُّورِ فِي الْمَغْرِبِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jubair bin Mut’im (may Allah be pleased with him), who says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) reciting Surah At-Tur in the Maghrib prayer.
Hadith 88
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : إِنَّ أُمَّ الْفَضْلِ ابْنَةَ الْحَارِثِ سَمِعَتْهُ وَهُوَ يَقْرَأُ وَالْمُرْسَلاتِ عُرْفًا ، فَقَالَتْ : يَا بُنَيَّ ، لَقَدْ ذَكَّرْتَنِي بِقِرَاءَتِكَ هَذِهِ السُّورَةَ ، إِنَّهَا لآخِرُ مَا سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْرَأُ بِهَا فِي الْمَغْرِبِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that his mother, Umm Fadl bint Harith, heard him reciting: ﴿وَالْمُرْسَلَاتِ عُرْفًا﴾. She said: O my son! By reciting this Surah, you have reminded me that indeed this is the last Surah I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recite in the Maghrib prayer.
Hadith 89
أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، عَنْ أُمِّهِ أُمِّ الْفَضْلِ ، " أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْرَأُ بِهَا فِي الْمَغْرِبِ بِالْمُرْسَلاتِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he reports from his mother, Sayyida Umm Fadl (may Allah be pleased with her), that she heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting Surah Al-Mursalat in the Maghrib prayer.
Hadith 90
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْعَتَمَةِ فَقَرَأَ فِيهَا بِالتِّينِ وَالزَّيْتُونِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I offered the Isha prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he recited ﴿وَالتِّينِ وَالزَّيْتُونِ﴾.
Hadith 91
أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَجِيدِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ سَعِيد ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَدِيُّ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ ، أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ ، " أَنَّهُ صَلَّى مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْعِشَاءَ فَقَرَأَ فِيهَا بِالتِّينِ وَالزَّيْتُونِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bara’ bin ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited Surah At-Tin in the ‘Isha prayer.
Hadith 92
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ حَمْزَةَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الْمَازِنِيِّ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ سَأَلَ أَبَا وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيَّ مَاذَا كَانَ يَقْرَأُ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الأَضْحَى وَالْفِطْرِ ؟ قَالَ : " كَانَ يَقْرَأُ ق ، وَالْقُرْآنِ الْمَجِيدِ ، وَاقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ ، وَانْشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ " .
Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Abu Waqid Al-Laithi (may Allah be pleased with him): "Which Surahs did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recite in the Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr prayers?" He replied: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah Qaf and Surah Qamar."
Hadith 93
أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي لُبَابَةَ ، وَعَاصِمِ ابْنِ بَهْدَلَةَ ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ : إِنَّ أَخَاكَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يُحْكِمُهَا مِنَ الْمُصْحَفِ ، فَقَالَ : إِنِّي سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : قِيلَ لِي ، فَقُلْتُ : فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Zirr bin Hubaish (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I asked Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) about the Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas) and said to him: "Your religious brother Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) erases these two surahs from the Mushaf." Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about this, and he (ﷺ) said: (Through Jibreel) it was said to me: Say, 'Qul a'udhu...' (i.e., it was revealed). So I said, 'Qul a'udhu...'. Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We also say what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said."
Hadith 94
أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ بَهْدَلَةَ ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمُزَنِيِّ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ : رَأَيْتُ كَأَنَّ رَجُلا يَكْتُبُ الْقُرْآنَ فَلَمَّا مَرَّ بِالسَّجْدَةِ الَّتِي فِي ص سَجَدَتْ شَجَرَةٌ ، فَقَالَتِ : اللَّهُمَّ أَعْطِنِي بِهَا أَجْرًا وَاحْطُطْ بِهَا وِزْرًا أَوْ أَحْدِثْ بِهَا شُكْرًا . فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِالسُّجُودِ مِنَ الشَّجَرَةِ " فَسَجَدَهَا وَأَمَرَ بِالسُّجُودِ فِيهَا .
Bakr bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: I saw (in a dream) a servant who was writing the Qur'an. When he reached the prostration (sajdah) in Surah Sad, there was a tree nearby which fell down in prostration, and the tree said: "O Allah! For this, write a reward for me, erase my burden, and make it a prostration of gratitude for me." When the Prophet ﷺ heard this dream, he said: "We are more deserving of prostration than the tree." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed prostration and also commanded prostration in this Surah.
Hadith 95
وَأَنْبَأَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ , عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قُسَيْطٍ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، " أَنَّهُ قَرَأَ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالنَّجْمِ فَلَمْ يَسْجُدْ فِيهَا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that he recited Surah An-Najm before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace be upon him) did not perform the prostration of recitation.
Hadith 96
وَأَنْبَأَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ ثَوْبَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، " أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَرَأَ بِالنَّجْمِ فَسَجَدَ فِيهَا وَسَجَدَ النَّاسُ مَعَهُ إِلا رَجُلَيْنِ قَالَ : أَرَادَا الشُّهْرَةَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited Surah An-Najm and performed the prostration of recitation. All the people prostrated along with him (peace and blessings be upon him) except for two men; they did not prostrate in order to become well-known.
Hadith 97
وَأَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ , عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، مَوْلَى الأَسْوَدِ بْنِ سُفْيَانَ , عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ قَرَأَ لَهُمْ إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انْشَقَّتْ فَسَجَدَ فِيهَا فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ أَخْبَرَهُمْ " أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَجَدَ فِيهَا " .
It is narrated from Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) led them in prayer, and when he recited (إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انْشَقَّتْ), he performed a prostration of recitation. When the prayer was finished, he explained that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had also performed a prostration of recitation upon reciting this Surah.
Hadith 98
أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ , عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ , عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : " سَجَدْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انْشَقَّتْ " .
It is narrated from Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We performed sajdah (prostration) with the Prophet (ﷺ) in (the recitation of) "When the sky is split asunder" (إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انْشَقَّتْ).
Hadith 99
أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ الدَّرَاوَرْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْهَادِ , عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّهُ رَآهُ يَسْجُدُ فِي إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انْشَقَّتْ ، قَالَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ : فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قُلْتُ لَهُ : سَجَدْتَ فِي سُورَةٍ مَا رَأَيْتُ النَّاسَ يَسْجُدُونَ فِيهَا ، قَالَ : " إِنَّنِي لَوْ لَمْ أَرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْجُدُ فِيهَا لَمْ أَسْجُدْ فِيهَا " .
It is narrated from Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) that he saw Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) performing the prostration of recitation upon reciting: ﴿إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انْشَقَّتْ﴾. Abu Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: When Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) finished, I said: I have not seen people performing the prostration of recitation upon this surah; why do you do it? Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "If I had not seen the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performing the prostration in it, I would not do it."
Hadith 100
أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ الزُّرَقِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو حُمَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيُّ ، أَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ ؟ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " قُولُوا : اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Humayd As-Sa‘idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! In which words should we send blessings upon you? The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Say like this: ‘O Allah! Send mercy upon Muhammad (ﷺ), upon his wives, and upon his offspring, as You sent mercy upon the family of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and send blessings upon Muhammad (ﷺ), upon his wives, and upon his offspring, as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Surely, You are Most Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.’”
Hadith 101
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمُجْمِرِ ، أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ الأَنْصَارِيَّ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ زَيْدٍ هُوَ الَّذِي كَانَ أُرِيَ النِّدَاءَ بِالصَّلاةِ وَأَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الأَنْصَارِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَجْلِسِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ بَشِيرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ : أَمَرَنَا اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ ؟ قَالَ : فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْنَا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " قُولُوا : اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ إِنَّكَ حُمَيْدٌ مَجِيدٌ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he states: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we were in the gathering of Sayyiduna Sa'd bin 'Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Bashir bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Allah Almighty has commanded us to send blessings upon you; how should we send blessings upon you? The narrator says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent until we wished that we had not asked him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say like this: «اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِى الْعَالَمِينَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ» and peace as you have been taught."
Hadith 102
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدٍ الْقَارِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ هِشَامَ بْنَ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ ، يَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ عَلَى غَيْرِ مَا أَقْرَؤُهَا وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَقْرَأَنِيهَا فَكِدْتُ أَنْ أَعْجَلَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَمْهَلْتُهُ حَتَّى انْصَرَفَ لَيْلَتَهُ فَجِئْتُ بِهِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ هَذَا يَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ عَلَى غَيْرِ مَا أَقْرَأْتَنِيهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اقْرَأْ " ، فَقَرَأَ الْقِرَاءَةَ الَّتِي سَمِعْتُهُ يَقْرَأُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي : " اقْرَأْ " فَقَرَأْتُ فَقَالَ : " هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ ، إِنَّ هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ أُنْزِلَ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ " .
Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I heard Hisham bin Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) reciting Surah Al-Furqan in a different recitation from mine, although my recitation was taught to me by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself. I was about to hasten to quarrel with him, but I gave him respite until he finished the prayer. Then I brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I heard him reciting Surah Al-Furqan in a recitation different from the one you taught me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Recite." He recited in the same way as I had heard him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It was revealed in this way." Then he said to me: "Recite." I recited, and he said: "It was revealed in this way also. Indeed, this Qur'an has been revealed upon seven modes, so recite whichever of them is easy for you."
Hadith 103
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا مَثَلُ صَاحِبِ الْقُرْآنِ كَمَثَلِ صَاحِبِ الإِبِلِ الْمُعَلَّقَةِ إِنْ عَاهَدَ عَلَيْهَا أَمْسَكَهَا وَإِنْ أَطْلَقَهَا ذَهَبَتْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "The example of the one who memorizes the Qur'an is like the owner of a camel whose legs are tied; if he takes care of it, he will keep it, and if he lets it go, it will run away."
Hadith 104
عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ , عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ حَلَفَ بِيَمِينٍ فَقَالَ : إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ ، فَقَدِ اسْتَثْنَى " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says «إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ» while taking an oath is exempted from fulfilling that oath."
Hadith 105
عَنِ الثَّقَفِيِّ , عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ الطَّوِيلِ , عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : كَانَ لأَبِي طَلْحَةَ مِنْ أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ ابْنٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ : أَبُو عُمَيْرٍ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُضَاحِكُهُ إِذَا دَخَلَ وَكَانَ لَهُ نُغِيرٌ فَدَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَرَأَى أَبَا عُمَيْرٍ حَزِينًا ، فَقَالَ : " مَا شَأْنُ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ ؟ " فَقِيلَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَاتَ نُغَيْرُهُ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَبَا عُمَيْرٍ مَا فَعَلَ النُّغَيْرُ ؟ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) had a son from Sayyida Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), whose name was Abu Umair (may Allah be pleased with him). When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would visit their house, he used to joke with him. Sayyiduna Abu Umair (may Allah be pleased with him) had a bird called Nughayr (bulbul). One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went and saw that Abu Umair (may Allah be pleased with him) was sad. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What has happened to him?" It was told that his bird (Nughayr) had died. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Umair! What did the Nughayr do?"
Hadith 106
عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الطَّحَاوِيُّ : يَقُولُونَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ السَّائِبَةِ كَذَلِكَ , حَدَّثَنَاهُ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الطَّحَاوِيُّ : يَقُولُونَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ السَّائِبَةِ كَذَلِكَ , حَدَّثَنَاهُ يُونُسُ , عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، نَفْسِهِ , عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارِ , عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ السَّائِبَةِ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا اسْتَعَارَ بَعِيرًا مِنْ رَجُلٍ فَعَطَبَ ، فَأُتِيَ بِهِ إِلَى مَرْوَانَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ ، فَأَرْسَلَ مَرْوَانُ إِلَى أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ فَأَوْقَفُوهُ بَيْنَ السِّمَاطَيْنِ فَسَأَلَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " يَغْرَمُ .
It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Saibah (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man borrowed a camel from another for use, but he made it weak (or injured it). He was brought to Marwan bin Hakam (may Allah have mercy on him), so Marwan (may Allah have mercy on him) sent him to Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) for judgment. He (Abu Hurairah) made the man stand among the soldiers and inquired (i.e., heard the case), then gave the verdict that compensation should be paid.
Hadith 107
أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ , عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " وَمَنْ أَدْرَكَ مِنَ الصَّلاةِ رَكْعَةً فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever catches one rak'ah of the prayer has indeed caught the prayer."
Hadith 108
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ , عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، وعَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، وَعَنِ الأَعْرَجِ ، يُحَدِّثُونَهُ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ أَدْرَكَ رَكْعَةً مِنَ الصُّبْحِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَ الصُّبْحَ وَمَنْ أَدْرَكَ رَكْعَةً مِنَ الْعَصْرِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَغْرُبَ الشَّمْسُ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَ الْعَصْرَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever catches one rak‘ah of the Fajr prayer before the sun rises has certainly caught the Fajr prayer, and whoever catches one rak‘ah of the ‘Asr prayer before the sun sets has caught the ‘Asr prayer.”
Hadith 109
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ , عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ أَدْرَكَ رَكْعَةً مِنَ الصَّلاةِ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَ الصَّلاةَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever catches one rak'ah of the prayer has caught the prayer."
Hadith 110
أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الأَنْصَارِيِّ ، " أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى أَنْ نَسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةَ بِغَائِطٍ أَوْ بَوْلٍ وَلَكِنْ شَرِّقُوا أَوْ غَرِّبُوا " . قَالَ : فَقَدِمْنَا الشَّامَ قَالَ : فَوَجَدْنَا مَرَاحِيضَ قَدْ بُنِيَتْ قِبَلَ الْقِبْلَةِ فَنَنْحَرِفُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade facing the Qiblah while relieving oneself. (If one is in Madinah,) one should face east or west. The narrator says: When we went to Syria, we found that the toilets were built facing the Qiblah, so we would sit slightly turned in the toilet and, upon coming out, would seek forgiveness.
Hadith 111
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ , عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ , عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، مَوْلَى أَبِي أَيُّوبَ وَكَانَ يُقَالُ لَهُ : مَوْلَى أَبِي طَلْحَةَ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا أَيُّوبَ الأَنْصَارِيَّ ، صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ وَهُوَ بِمِصْرَ : وَاللَّهِ مَا أَدْرِي كَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ بِهَذِهِ الْكَرَايِيسِ وَقَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا ذَهَبَ أَحَدُكُمُ الْغَائِطَ أَوِ الْبَوْلَ فَلا يَسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ وَلا يَسْتَدْبِرْهَا بِفَرْجِهِ " .
Raafi’ bin Ishaaq, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah have mercy on him), says that he heard the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), in Egypt saying: “By Allah! I do not know what to do about these latrines (toilets), and indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘When you go to relieve yourself, do not face the Ka’bah nor turn your back towards it.’”
Hadith 112
وَأَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكٌ , عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، مَوْلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ , عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا ، مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ أَخْبَرَهُ , عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَنْهَى أَنْ تُسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةُ لِغَائِطٍ أَوْ بَوْلٍ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that an Ansari informed him that his father heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbidding facing the Qiblah at the time of relieving oneself.
Hadith 113
أَنْبَأَنَا مَالِكٌ , عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَبَّانَ ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ وَاسِعِ بْنِ حَبَّانَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ : إِنَّ نَاسًا يَقُولُونَ : إِذَا قَعَدْتَ عَلَى حَاجَتِكَ فَلا تَسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ وَلا بَيْتَ الْمَقْدِسِ ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : لَقَدِ ارْتَقَيْتُ عَلَى ظَهْرِ بَيْتٍ لَنَا فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى لَبِنَتَيْنِ مُسْتَقْبِلا بَيْتَ الْمَقْدِسِ لِحَاجَتِهِ ، وَقَالَ : " لَعَلَّكَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى أَوْرَاكِهِمْ ؟ " قُلْتُ : لا أَدْرِي وَاللَّهِ ، يَعْنِي الَّذِي يَسْجُدُ وَلا يَرْتَفِعُ عَنِ الأَرْضِ يَسْجُدُ وَهُوَ لاصِقٌ بِالأَرْضِ . حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ , قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ الْمُزَنِيَّ يَقُولُ : قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ : وَلَيْسَ حَدِيثُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ مُخَالِفًا عِنْدَنَا حَدِيثَ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ ، فَيُكْرَهُ لِلَّذِي فِي الصَّحْرَاءِ اسْتِقْبَالُ الْقِبْلَةِ وَاسْتِدْبَارُهَا ؛ لأَنَّهُ لا مُؤْنَةَ عَلَيْهِ فِي تَرْكِ الاسْتِقْبَالِ وَالاسْتِدْبَارِ وَلا مِرْفَقَ لَهُ فِيهِمَا وَإِذَا بُنِيَتِ الْكُنُفُ فِي الْمَنَازِلِ تَوَضَّأَ فِيهَا كَمَا أَمْكَنَهُ لِلْمِرْفَقِ وَقَدْ كَتَبْتُ هَذَا بِتَفْسِيرِهِ فِي غَيْرِ هَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): Indeed, people say that at the time of relieving oneself, do not face the Qiblah or Bayt al-Maqdis. And Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I once climbed onto the roof of my house and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sitting on two bricks (relieving himself), and his face was towards Bayt al-Maqdis (that is, his back was towards the Ka'bah). Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to his student Wasi' (may Allah have mercy on him): Perhaps you are among those people who pray on their buttocks? Wasi' (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I said, "By Allah, I do not know what you mean?" (Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, says: Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) meant by this the person who does not rise from the ground in prayer and clings to the ground in prostration, which is an incorrect and contrary-to-Sunnah act). Abu Ja'far (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I heard Muzani (may Allah have mercy on him) saying: Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says: According to us, there is no contradiction between the hadith of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and the hadith of Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). In open spaces, facing or turning one's back (to the Qiblah) is disliked, because there is no hardship in acting upon this hadith in the desert, so there is no concession. And in houses, in latrines, one will act as is possible. The Imam (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I have explained this hadith in detail elsewhere.
Hadith 114
وَأَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ , عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا مَسْعُودٍ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي لأَتَخَلَّفُ عَنْ صَلاةِ الصُّبْحِ مِمَّا يُطَوِّلُ بِنَا فُلانٌ ، فَقَالَ : فَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ غَضِبَ فِي مَوْعِظَةٍ قَطُّ غَضَبَهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ مِنْكُمْ مُنَفِّرِينَ إِنَّ مِنْكُمْ مُنَفِّرِينَ فَأَيُّكُمْ أَمَّ النَّاسَ فَإِنَّ فِيهِمُ الْكَبِيرَ وَالسَّقِيمَ وَالضَّعِيفَ وَذَا الْحَاجَةِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Such-and-such Imam leads a long prayer, so I stay behind from the prayer. Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I have never seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) more angry in giving advice than on that day. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, some of you want to make people dislike the religion. Surely, some of you want to make people dislike the religion. Whoever among you leads the prayer should make it light, for among the congregation are the elderly, the sick, the weak, and those who have needs to attend to.” (Everyone’s condition should be considered)
Hadith 115
أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ , عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَنَزَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ فَرَأَيْتُهُ " يَؤُمُّ النَّاسَ فَصَلَّى صَلاةً فَخَفَّفَ فِيهَا " ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ أَهَكَذَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ وَأَوْجَزَ " .
Ibn Abi Khalid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, who said: I came to Madinah Munawwarah and stayed with Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). I saw that when he led the people in prayer, he would perform a light (short) prayer. I said: O Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with you)! Did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) pray like this? He replied: Yes, and he would pray briefly.
Hadith 116
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : إِنْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " لَيَأْمُرُنَا بِالتَّخْفِيفِ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَيَؤُمُّنَا بِالصَّافَّاتِ " .

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الطَّحَاوِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بِشْرٍ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ مَرْوَانَ الرَّقِّيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ , عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : إِنْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " لَيَأْمُرُنَا بِالتَّخْفِيفِ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَيَؤُمُّنَا بِالصَّافَّاتِ فِي الصُّبْحِ " .
Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to command us to lighten the prayer, although he (ﷺ) would lead us in the Fajr prayer by reciting Surah As-Saffat.
