It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was performing prayer on his mount during the expedition of Banu Anmar, while his face was towards the east.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "Is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not a model for you?" I replied, "Why not! By Allah." He then said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform Witr on the camel itself."

A man from Banu Ghifar was leading the people in prayer. I heard him reciting Surah Maryam in the first rak‘ah and Surah Al-Mutaffifin in the second during the Fajr prayer. (Since in this Surah, those who cheat in weighing and measuring are condemned), there was a man from our area who had two scales: if he wanted to buy goods, he would weigh with one scale, and if he wanted to sell goods, he would weigh with the other scale. So I said: Destruction be for so-and-so.

He (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked, “Why do you need to stand for so long when Allah Almighty has already forgiven you?” He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: “Should I not be a grateful servant of Allah?”

Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about this, and he (ﷺ) said: (Through Jibreel) it was said to me: Say, 'Qul a'udhu...' (i.e., it was revealed). So I said, 'Qul a'udhu...'. Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We also say what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said."

Bakr bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: I saw (in a dream) a servant who was writing the Qur'an. When he reached the prostration (sajdah) in Surah Sad, there was a tree nearby which fell down in prostration, and the tree said: "O Allah! For this, write a reward for me, erase my burden, and make it a prostration of gratitude for me." When the Prophet ﷺ heard this dream, he said: "We are more deserving of prostration than the tree." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed prostration and also commanded prostration in this Surah.

When the prayer was finished, he explained that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had also performed a prostration of recitation upon reciting this Surah.

Abu Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: When Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) finished, I said: I have not seen people performing the prostration of recitation upon this surah; why do you do it? Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "If I had not seen the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performing the prostration in it, I would not do it."

Surely, You are Most Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.’”

Sayyiduna Bashir bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Allah Almighty has commanded us to send blessings upon you; how should we send blessings upon you? The narrator says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent until we wished that we had not asked him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say like this: «اللَّهُمَّصَلِّعَلَىمُحَمَّدٍوَعَلَىآلِمُحَمَّدٍكَمَاصَلَّيْتَعَلَىآلِإِبْرَاهِيمَوَبَارِكْعَلَىمُحَمَّدٍوَعَلَىآلِمُحَمَّدٍكَمَابَارَكْتَعَلَىآلِإِبْرَاهِيمَفِىالْعَالَمِينَإِنَّكَحَمِيدٌمَجِيدٌ» and peace as you have been taught."

Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I heard Hisham bin Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) reciting Surah Al-Furqan in a different recitation from mine, although my recitation was taught to me by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself. I was about to hasten to quarrel with him, but I gave him respite until he finished the prayer. Then I brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I heard him reciting Surah Al-Furqan in a recitation different from the one you taught me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Recite." He recited in the same way as I had heard him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It was revealed in this way." Then he said to me: "Recite." I recited, and he said: "It was revealed in this way also. Indeed, this Qur'an has been revealed upon seven modes, so recite whichever of them is easy for you."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) had a son from Sayyida Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), whose name was Abu Umair (may Allah be pleased with him). When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would visit their house, he used to joke with him. Sayyiduna Abu Umair (may Allah be pleased with him) had a bird called Nughayr (bulbul). One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went and saw that Abu Umair (may Allah be pleased with him) was sad. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What has happened to him?" It was told that his bird (Nughayr) had died. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Umair! What did the Nughayr do?"

It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Saibah (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man borrowed a camel from another for use, but he made it weak (or injured it). He was brought to Marwan bin Hakam (may Allah have mercy on him), so Marwan (may Allah have mercy on him) sent him to Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) for judgment. He (Abu Hurairah) made the man stand among the soldiers and inquired (i.e., heard the case), then gave the verdict that compensation should be paid.

(If one is in Madinah,) one should face east or west. The narrator says: When we went to Syria, we found that the toilets were built facing the Qiblah, so we would sit slightly turned in the toilet and, upon coming out, would seek forgiveness.

I do not know what to do about these latrines (toilets), and indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘When you go to relieve yourself, do not face the Ka’bah nor turn your back towards it.’”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): Indeed, people say that at the time of relieving oneself, do not face the Qiblah or Bayt al-Maqdis. And Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I once climbed onto the roof of my house and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sitting on two bricks (relieving himself), and his face was towards Bayt al-Maqdis (that is, his back was towards the Ka'bah). Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to his student Wasi' (may Allah have mercy on him): Perhaps you are among those people who pray on their buttocks? Wasi' (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I said, "By Allah, I do not know what you mean?" (Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, says: Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) meant by this the person who does not rise from the ground in prayer and clings to the ground in prostration, which is an incorrect and contrary-to-Sunnah act). Abu Ja'far (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I heard Muzani (may Allah have mercy on him) saying: Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says: According to us, there is no contradiction between the hadith of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and the hadith of Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). In open spaces, facing or turning one's back (to the Qiblah) is disliked, because there is no hardship in acting upon this hadith in the desert, so there is no concession. And in houses, in latrines, one will act as is possible. The Imam (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I have explained this hadith in detail elsewhere.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Such-and-such Imam leads a long prayer, so I stay behind from the prayer. Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I have never seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) more angry in giving advice than on that day. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, some of you want to make people dislike the religion. Surely, some of you want to make people dislike the religion. Whoever among you leads the prayer should make it light, for among the congregation are the elderly, the sick, the weak, and those who have needs to attend to.” (Everyone’s condition should be considered)

Ibn Abi Khalid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, who said: I came to Madinah Munawwarah and stayed with Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). I saw that when he led the people in prayer, he would perform a light (short) prayer. I said: O Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with you)! Did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) pray like this? He replied: Yes, and he would pray briefly.

Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to command us to lighten the prayer, although he (ﷺ) would lead us in the Fajr prayer by reciting Surah As-Saffat.
