عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَرْجَانَةَ ، قَالَ : ذُكِرَ لابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ تَلا هَذِهِ الآيَةَ وَإِنْ تُبْدُوا مَا فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَوْ تُخْفُوهُ يُحَاسِبْكُمْ بِهِ اللَّهُ سورة البقرة آية 284 فَبَكَى ، ثُمّ قَالَ : وَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ آخَذَنَا اللَّهُ بِهَا لَنَهْلَكَنَّ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَدْ وَجَدَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ مِنْهَا حِينَ نَزَلَتْ مَا وَجَدَ فَذَكَرُوا ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَنَزَلَتْ لا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلا وُسْعَهَا لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا اكْتَسَبَتْ سورة البقرة آية 286 مِنَ الْقَوْلِ وَالْعَمَلِ وَكَانَ حَدِيثُ النَّفْسِ مِمَّا لا يَمْلِكُهُ أَحَدٌ وَلا يَقْدِرُ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ " .

أَخْبَرَنِي أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْحُمَيْدِيُّ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ خَلَفِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عِيسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ لِلَّحَوَارِيِّينَ : " كَمَا تَرَكَ لَكُمُ الْمُلُوكُ الْحِكْمَةَ فَاتْرُكُوهُمْ وَالدُّنْيَا " ، وَكَانَ خَلَفٌ يَقُولُ : يَنْبَغِي لِلنَّاسِ أَنْ يَتَعَلَّمُوا هَذِهِ الأَبْيَاتِ فِي الْفِتْنَةِ : الْحَرْبُ أَوَّلَ مَا تَكُونُ فَتِيَّةٌ تَسْعَى بِزِينَتِهَا لِكُلِّ جَهُولِ حَتَّى إِذَا اشْتَعَلَتْ وَشَبَّ ضِرَامُهَا وَلَّتْ عَجُوزًا غَيْرَ ذَاتِ حَلِيلِ شَمْطَاءَ جَزَّتْ رَأْسَهَا وَتَنَكَّرَتْ مَكْرُوهَةً لِلشَّمِّ وَالتَّقْبِيلِ .
Ibn Marjanah says that it was reported to Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) recited this verse: "Whether you disclose what is in your hearts or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it." So Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) began to weep and said, "If Allah takes us to account for this, we will be destroyed." Then Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: May Allah have mercy on Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). When this verse was revealed, it was hard on the Muslims, so they mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then this verse was revealed: "Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. Whatever good it earns is for itself, and whatever evil it incurs is against itself." Whether it is a statement or an action, and as for the thoughts of the heart, no one has control or power over them.
