Sunan al-Shafi'i 331 — What has been reported about the prohibition
وَأَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الْوِصَالِ فَقِيلَ : إِنَّكَ تُوَاصِلُ ؟ فَقَالَ : " إِنِّي لَسْتُ مِثْلَكُمْ : إِنِّي أُطْعَمُ وَأُسْقَى " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade continuous fasting. The noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) submitted: Do you yourself observe continuous fasting? So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My case is not like yours; indeed, I am given food and drink."
