Hadith 3317

أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، قَالَ: كَانَ عُرْوَةُ مِنْ أَشَدِّ النَّاسِ فِي الْإِحْدَادِ، لَقَدْ سَأَلَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ تَلْبَسُ خِمَارًا بِبَقَّمٍ وَهِيَ حَادَّةٌ؟ فَقَالَ: «لَا» فَقَالَتْ: لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا لِي غَيْرُهُ، فَقَالَ: «اصْبَغِيهِ إِذًا بِسَوَادٍ» وَقَالَ عُرْوَةُ: «السُّنَّةُ فِي الْإِحْدَادِ أَنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ لَا يَحِلُّ لَهَا أَنْ تُحِدَّ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ، فَإِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الرَّابِعِ أُمِرَتْ أَنْ يَمَسَّ دِرْعَهَا الصُّفْرَةُ أَوِ الزَّعْفَرَانُ، إِنِ الْمَرْأَةُ حَادَّةٌ عَلَى زَوْجِهَا فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَمَسُّ شَيْئًا حَتَّى يَنْقَضِيَ أَجَلُهَا»
Hazrat Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Mourning is strict upon a woman; a colored veil is not permissible, she should use a black veil, and a widow should complete her waiting period (‘iddah)."
Brief Explanation
Benefit: «الحداد على غير الزوج لا يجوز فوق ثلاث، أما على الزوج فيكون أربعة أشهر وعشراً» That is: Mourning for someone other than the husband is permissible only for up to three days, and mourning for the husband is obligatory for the full waiting period (ʿiddah) of four months and ten days. ✅ Summary: This narration: in terms of chain, is hasan, the statement of a Tabi‘i jurist, and an explanation of a juristic principle. In it: the limits of abstaining from adornment, the duration of mourning, the nature of colors and clothing—everything is explained in a very balanced and simple manner.
