Sunan Sa'id bin Mansur 3311 — on what a widow must avoid during

Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked whether a woman whose husband has passed away may apply ithmid (a well-known kohl) during her 'iddah. Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: "No, even if there is pain in her eyes, she should be patient and treat it with zurur (a kohl made from herbs)."

Brief Explanation
Benefit: This narration is authentic in its chain and is evidence of the juristic understanding and precautionary stance of Sayyidah Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha. From this, it is established that: during the waiting period (‘iddah) of widowhood, a woman should avoid adornment as much as possible, to the extent that even medicine should be such that it is not of an adorning nature.
