أَخْبَرَنَا الشَّرِيفُ أَبُو الْفَتْحِ الْعُمَرِيُّ، أنبأ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ الشُّرَيْحِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ الْبَغَوِيُّ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْجَعْدِ، أنبأ شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي عُقَيْلٍ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ قَالَ: قُرِئَ عَلَيْنَا كِتَابُ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ " أَنْ كُلُوا الْجُبْنَ مِمَّا صَنَعَهُ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ " قَالَ الشَّيْخُ: هُوَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْعُقَيْلِيُّ، وَعَمُّهُ ثَوْرُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ، رَوَاهُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَنْهُ.
Shu'bah narrates from a man of Banu Uqayl, who narrates from his paternal uncle, that a letter of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was read out to us, in which it was written: Eat the cheese made by the People of the Book.
أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْأَرْدَسْتَانِيُّ، أنبأ أَبُو نَصْرٍ الْعِرَاقِيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ الْجَوْهَرِيُّ، ⦗١١⦘ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْهِلَالِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، حَدَّثَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْعُقَيْلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي عَمِّي ثَوْرُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ، قَالَ: جَاءَنَا كِتَابُ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنْ " لَا تَأْكُلُوا مِنَ الْجُبْنِ إِلَّا مَا صَنَعَ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ ".
Thawr bin Qudamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A letter of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us, saying that we should eat only the cheese made by the People of the Book.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ إِمْلَاءً سَنَةَ سَبْعٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ، ثنا هَارُونُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، وَشُعْبَةَ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ سَكَنٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ - هُوَ - ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: " كُلُوا الْجُبْنَ مَا صَنَعَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ وَأَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ ".
Qays bin Sakan (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Eat the cheese made by the Muslims and the People of the Book.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ الْبَارِقِيِّ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ عَنِ الْجُبْنِ، فَقَالَ: " كُلْ مَا صَنَعَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ وَأَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ "، وَرُوِّينَا مِثْلَ هَذَا عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، وَأَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، وَهَذَا لِأَنَّ السِّخَالَ تُذْبَحُ، فَتُؤْخَذُ مِنْهَا الْإِنْفَحَةُ الَّتِي بِهَا يَصْلُحُ الْجُبْنُ، فَإِذَا كَانَتْ مِنْ ذَبَائِحِ الْمَجُوسِ، وَأَهْلِ الْأَوْثَانِ لَمْ يَحِلَّ، وَهَكَذَا إِذَا مَاتَتِ السَّخْلَةُ فَأُخِذَتْ مِنْهَا الْإِنْفَحَةُ لَمْ تَحِلَّ.
Ali al-Bariqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said that he asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about cheese, and he said: "Eat what the Muslims and the People of the Book make." A similar report has also been transmitted from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas and Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with them).
Note: A young kid that is still suckling is slaughtered, and then something is taken out of its stomach; after being steeped in a cloth, it becomes like cheese, which people eat like cheese. If the animal was slaughtered by Magians or idol-worshippers, eating it is not permissible. Likewise, if the young kid dies, it is not permissible to make anything like cheese from it.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ، أنبأ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ الْبَصْرِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ، ثنا يَعْلَى بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ جَبَلَةَ بْنِ سُحَيْمٍ، قَالَ: سُئِلَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ عَنِ الْجُبْنِ وَالسَّمْنِ، فَقَالَ: " سَمِّ وَكُلْ "، فَقِيلَ: إِنَّ فِيهِ مَيْتَةً، فَقَالَ: " إِنْ عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ فِيهِ مَيْتَةً، فَلَا تَأْكُلْهُ ". وَقَدْ كَانَ بَعْضُ الصَّحَابَةِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمْ لَا يَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ تَغْلِيبًا لِلطَّهَارَةِ، رُوِّينَا ذَلِكَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، وَابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا وَغَيْرِهِمَا، وَبَعْضُهُمْ يَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ احْتِيَاطًا وَرُوِّينَا عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: " لَأَنْ أَخِرَّ مِنْ هَذَا الْقَصْرِ أَحَبُّ إِلِيَّ مِنْ أَنْ آكُلَ جُبْنًا لَا أَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ " وَعَنِ الْحَسَنِ الْبَصْرِيِّ، قَالَ: " كَانَ أَصْحَابُ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْأَلُونَ عَنِ الْجُبْنِ، وَلَا يَسْأَلُونَ عَنِ السَّمْنِ ".
Jabalah bin Suhaym (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was asked about cheese and ghee, and he said: Mention the name of Allah and eat. It was said: What if there is carrion in it? He said: If you know that it contains carrion, then do not eat it. Some of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did not ask about it, giving precedence to purity, and this has been narrated from Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar and others, while some of them would ask about it out of caution. It is narrated from Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: That I should fall from this palace is more beloved to me than that I should eat cheese without asking about it. Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) used to ask about cheese, but they did not ask about ghee.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ - هُوَ - الْأَصَمُّ، أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ، أنبأ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي الْخَلِيلُ بْنُ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ أَبَانَ بْنِ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: " كُنَّا نَأْكُلُ الْجُبْنَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَبَعْدَ ذَلِكَ لَا نَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ، وَكَانَ أَنَسٌ لَا يَأْكُلُ إِلَّا مَا صَنَعُ الْمُسْلِمُونَ، وَأَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ " ⦗١٢⦘ أَبَانُ بْنُ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ مَتْرُوكٌ.
Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We used to eat cheese in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and after him as well, but we did not ask about it. And Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) would eat only the cheese that the Muslims and the People of the Book made.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ هُوَ الْأَصَمُّ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُكْرَمٍ، ثنا أَبُو النَّضْرِ، ثنا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، ثنا عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ، عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ جُمْهَانَ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: " يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ يَعْنِي لِابْنِ عُمَرَ أَوْ قَالَ غَيْرِي مَرَرْتُ عَلَى دَجَاجَةٍ مَيْتَةٍ، فَوَطِئْتُ عَلَيْهَا، فَخَرَجَتْ مِنِ اسْتِهَا بَيْضَةٌ، آكُلُهَا؟ "، قَالَ: لَا، قَالَ: " يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مَرَرْتُ عَلَى دَجَاجَةٍ مَيْتَةٍ، فَوَطِئْتُ عَلَيْهَا، فَخَرَجَتْ مِنِ اسْتِهَا بَيْضَةٌ فَفَرَّخْتُهَا، فَأَخْرَجَتْ فَرْخًا، آكُلُهُ؟ "، قَالَ: " مِمَّنْ أَنْتَ؟ "، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: " مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ ".
Kathir bin Jumhan said: I said to Abu Abd al-Rahman, that is, Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) (or someone other than me said): I passed by a dead hen and trod on it, and an egg came out. May I eat this egg? He said: No. Then he asked: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! If I pass by a dead hen and put my weight on it, and an egg comes out of it, and a chick hatches from that egg, may I then eat it? He said: Which people are you from? I said: I am from the people of Iraq.
