Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "'Al-'aynu haqq' (The evil eye is real). If anything were to outstrip the decree, it would be the evil eye; and when you are asked to wash, then wash."

Al-Aswad narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "The one who casts the evil eye would be ordered to perform ablution, and the person afflicted by the eye would be bathed with that water."

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was bathing, and said: I have never, until today, seen even the skin of a secluded maiden like this. At this, Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) fell to the ground. He was carried to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it was said: Sahl has suddenly been struck down. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Whom do you suspect (of this)?" The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Amir bin Rabi'ah passed by. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Would you kill your brother? When one of you sees something good, why does he not pray for blessing for it?" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) to perform ablution: to wash his face and both hands up to the elbows, his legs up to the knees, and the inside of his lower garment, and then the water was to be poured over Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him).

Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned a similar hadith, (stating) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) called Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), rebuked him and said: "Would you kill your brother?" He said: "Bathe and provide the water (for him)." So Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) bathed and sprinkled the water over Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him), and he set off with the caravan.
Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The method of bathing for the one affected by the evil eye is this: a man stands holding a bowl, and the one who cast the eye takes water with his right hand and washes his face once into that same bowl; then he puts his left hand into the water and washes his right hand up to the elbow with his left hand into the bowl; then with his right hand he takes water from the bowl and washes his left hand up to the elbow into the bowl; then he puts both hands into the bowl once; then he rinses his mouth with his hand and spits it into the bowl; then he takes a handful of water with the left hand and pours it on the back of the right hand, letting the water fall into the bowl; then he puts his left hand into the bowl and pours water up to the elbow of the right arm, letting it fall into the bowl, and washes his other arm up to the neck; then he does the same with his left arm; then he washes the top of his right foot from near the toes, and does the same with the left foot; then he puts his left hand into the bowl and pours water on the right knee, and the same is then done with the left knee; then the right side of the lower garment is dipped into the water and taken out; then the man takes the bowl and pours the water over the face and head of the person affected by the eye from behind him.
(b) Ibn Abi Dhi'b (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) that the one who cast the eye is told to bring a bowl; he takes water with his right hand, rinses his mouth with it and washes his face; then takes water with the left hand and pours it on the palm of the right hand; then takes water with the right hand and pours it on the palm of the left hand; then takes water with the left hand and pours it on the right elbow; then takes water with the right hand and pours it on the left foot; then takes water with the right and left hands and washes the right and left knees; then one edge of the lower garment is washed in the bowl, and the bowl is not to be put on the ground; then he pours it over the person affected by the eye.
