Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to sell two slave boys who were brothers. When selling them I separated them, and I told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Find them and take them back, and sell them together; do not separate them."

Al-Za'farani narrated it from Abd al-Wahhab, from Sa'id, from al-Hakam bin Utaybah, and mentioned something similar, except that he said: From Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: He ordered me. This is how I found it in the original of my book from Sa'id. Ahmad bin Hanbal narrated it from Abd al-Wahhab, from Sa'id, from a man, from al-Hakam.

Through another chain, via Sa'id, from a man, from al-Hakam, from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates something similar from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Ibn al-Khurasani said: This is correct.
The Shaykh said: This is more likely; the rest of Shu'bah's students did not mention it from Shu'bah, while the rest of Sa'id's students mentioned it from Sa'id in this way.

Through another chain, via Ibn Abi Arubah, from a man, from al-Hakam bin Utaybah, from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned the like of it. Al-Hajjaj bin Artah narrated it from al-Hakam, from Maymun bin Abi Shabib, from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).

Maymun bin Abi Shabib narrates from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me two slave boys who were brothers as a gift. I sold one of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What happened to the slave boys?" I said: I have sold one of them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take him back."
This is how al-Hajjaj narrated it, and al-Hajjaj is not used as proof; the hadith of Abu Khalid al-Dalani from al-Hakam is more likely to be the preserved one, because of its many corroborating reports, and Allah knows best.

Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "cursed the one who separates a father and his child, and two brothers."
The Shaykh says: This Ibrahim bin Isma'il bin Mujammi' is not used as proof. It has also been reported from him (through another chain) that Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning a father and his child.

This Jabir is Ibn Yazid al-Ju'fi; he alone narrated it through these two chains.
