أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الْحَافِظُ إِمْلَاءً وَأَبُو الْفَضْلِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْمُزَكِّي قِرَاءَةً، قَالَا: ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْحَرَشِيُّ، أنبأ الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: جَاءَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ نَحْفِرُ الْخَنْدَقَ وَنَنْقُلُ التُّرَابَ عَلَى أَكْتَافِنَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " اللهُمَّ لَا عَيْشَ إِلَّا عَيْشُ الْآخِرَةِ، فَاغْفِرْ لِلْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ ". رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنِ الْقَعْنَبِيِّ، وَرَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ عَنْ قُتَيْبَةَ وَغَيْرِهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ.
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we were digging the trench and carrying the soil out on our shoulders, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'Allahumma la 'aysha illa 'aysh al-akhirah, faghfir lil-muhajirati wal-ansar' (O Allah, there is no good life except the better life of the Hereafter; O Allah, forgive the Muhajirun and the Ansar).

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْأَدِيبُ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو يَعْلَى، ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ صُهَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: كَانَ الْمُهَاجِرُونَ وَالْأَنْصَارُ يَحْفِرُونَ الْخَنْدَقَ حَوْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ وَيَنْقُلُونَ التُّرَابَ عَلَى مُتُونِهِمْ، وَيَقُولُونَ:.
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Muhajirun and the Ansar were digging the trench around Madinah and carrying the soil out on their backs, and they were saying: We have pledged allegiance to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) on Islam for as long as we live. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would reply:
'Allahumma la khayra illa khayr al-akhirah, fabarik fil-ansari wal-muhajirah' (O Allah, there is no good except the good of the Hereafter; O Allah, bless the Ansar and the Muhajirun).
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: They would be given two handfuls of barley, and a dish would be made from it that was foul-smelling; it would stick in the throat and its smell was not pleasant, and that is what would be placed before the people.
