Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a gathering, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pledge allegiance to me that you will never associate anything with Allah." Then he recited a verse and said: "Whoever fulfils (the pledge) will have a reward; and whoever commits a wrong and is punished for it, that will be an expiation for him; and if someone commits a wrong and it remains concealed, his matter is with Allah: if He wills He forgives him, and if He wills He punishes him."

Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever commits a sin in this world and is punished for it, Allah is more just than to repeat the punishment upon His servants a second time; and whoever commits a sin in this world and Allah conceals it for him and pardons him, Allah is more generous than to go back on something He has already pardoned."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not know whether Tubba' was accursed or not, nor whether Dhu al-Qarnayn was a prophet or not; nor do I know whether the hudud (prescribed punishments) are an expiation for a person or not."
Abd al-Razzaq narrated it thus from Ma'mar, while Hisham al-San'ani narrated it from Ma'mar, from Ibn Abi Dhi'b, from al-Zuhri, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in mursal form. Al-Bukhari said: That is more correct, and this is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), because it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the hudud are an expiation.
The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We have recorded it through another route from Ibn Abi Dhi'b in connected (mawsul) form.

Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stoned Sharahah, I said: She died in a very evil state. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) took hold of my garment and said: The hadd for her sin has been carried out; it is an expiation for her.

Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) carried out a hadd punishment on a man, and the people began to revile him. So he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He will not be questioned about this sin of his.
